I find literal translations sometimes hard to understand, not because of the language but because there are stories behind some of the translations that need further explanation. I was wondering if you guys know of a good site or book that has the arabic text, the english translation, and also a detailed explanation for the translation?

just to clarify, the website is not an Islamic site, rather an ahmadi site....
can be quite misleading upon some issues....

any website/book you read will have it's share of equally misleading information based on it's own agenda.. same goes for the tafsirs etc which will tilt to using sources approved by the sect to which they belong.
You are better of reading whatever's in the Qur'an and using your imagination.. u won't do much better/worse than what others have conjectured so far.
^
using ur imagination can take u far from reality....
some verses in the Quran do require historical references and the context under what they were revealed....
otherwise u shud go and start killing non-muslims as Quran clearly says "kill them wherever u find them"....
but ofcourse if u coulpe that with hadith and tafsir u wont make such blunders....

u don't need any story tales but the understanding of how Qur'an is laid out and that things are to be taken in context.

Tafseers and references may help you to develop a deep understand but why would you have imaginations that can take you away from reality while goin through Quran.

Read the Tafsirs, especially of Ibn Kathir who lived over 700 years ago. His Tafsir is very simple to understand for everyone like any of his other books. It is the most preferred Tafsir by Islamic Scholars.
