It means that we become like those who we associate with most. If we are sitting in a crowd we become like that crowd. Also, it means that some people hesitate to do something but when they see others do it then they get brave to do it also. Just like Cheegum said about his sky dive, he had seen all his work mates doing it so he didn’t give it a second thought. And accordingly they became like each other by being in each other’s company.
You also get these scenes in films where there are a lot of people lined up with guns in their hands ready to press the trigger, but when one person shoots the gun by accident then all the others will starting shooting as well. It happened in Ghost Busters - and Ray says … “whoa whoa whoa … nice shooting Tex”
One night many years ago my brother and I were asleep … All of a sudden my brother gets up and starts screaming ( he had a cramp ) but because I was asleep and suddenly awoke - I too started to scream … My dad rushing in and he saw me with a face of horror pointing at my brother … 
He said my brother had a cramp and so he screamed, by why was I screaming - I said “I don’t know” and got teased about it. I happened another time too … We were in Pakistan and a little ant went in to my brother’s ear he screamed again and I got up and started screaming too …

I know a Persian equivalent: Kaboor ba kabootar, baaz ba baaz.. Hence '“Birds of the same feather flock together.”

I used to say tarbooza and kharbooz - took me a long time to finally get it right. 
There is a dialogue in hindi movie "Company"- "Hamare keral me ek kahavat hai, chhae (6) mahine (months) milne julne ke baad ye wo hojate hain aur wo ye":D
