Im way too late in transitioning my girls from bottles to sippy cups. They are a bit behind in self feeding but its mostly my fault because im paranoid about not letting them experience with food (incase they choke) and that has carried onto their drinking habit as well. If I give them a sippy cup, they simply won;t put the effort in sucking hard enough so the liquid comes out because of the valve and the valve free sippy cups makes them gag cuz the flow is too fast. Im so frustrated and I can’t help but question my parenting skills. I know they r soo behind in feeding and drinking issues compared to other kids.. Is it possible that perhaps its not too late and they can learn to drink from a sippy cup. Any products that can help me out with this issue. Any advice would be great. Thanks
Re: Tranisitoning to sippy cups
how old are your babies ? And do you want them to drink milk or water from the sippy cup ?
my daughter is 7 months and I am giving her water from a normal plastic cup (sometimes a bit messy but we allways have a cloth under her to collect any running water) and she drinks it, she too didnt like the valve sippy cup, so I just skipped that.
Re: Tranisitoning to sippy cups
I think the one I started her off with was a Nuby from Babies R Us. It had a rubber top. It works by pressing your mouth on it (kinda like when you bite something). It was sealed, so there were no spills. Because of her feeding issues, one of the things we tried was sippy cups (around 5 months of age). She still didn't take formula from the sippy cup, but she eventually started drinking water using it.
The other thing that works really well is those "toss n' go" type disposable sippy cups. You can get the smaller size (4 ounces I believe), and since they're really light weight, they're easy to hold for their tiny hands.
Trust me, all they need is some practice a few times, and they'll get a hang of it. Just keep trying with water or juice (whatever they like).
Re: Tranisitoning to sippy cups
Devi, dont worry too much about this. I introduced solids early on too but K didnt really start eating regulalry till much later. I say its not too late and follow their cues. I followed the advice of her ped and gave her cheerios and she loves to pick them up one by one. Put soft foods infront of them to entice them and get them interested but dont force. I am always scared of her choking too, even now but all of you are never going to find out what works and what not if you dont try.
For sippy cups, we did Nuby too. Infact i bought her some more of those because she loves them. Initially she would just collect the water/juice in her mouth and let it dribble. But now she can easily drink from them. There is the one Seabee mentioned and then there is a longer one with a straw. She has recently mastered the art of drinking of a regular glass too. the key is to introduce them to several foods and get them interested without forcing them.
Re: Tranisitoning to sippy cups
I am having a hard time with this too and he's 18 months. sigh I have gotten him 5 different cups, different syles, shapes, with handles, without handles, with different textured straws .... sigh .... he doesn't like it. He wants to drink from an open cup, which is fine, except he gargles with the drink instead of drinking it .... or he sticks his hand in it. sigh
sigh
sigh
The funny thing is, just last Saturday, he took another little boy's cup, held his cup, drank from the straw as if he's been doing it for months. I was so shocked .... he won't do it at home, but if it is someone else's he takes it. :(
Re: Tranisitoning to sippy cups
Nubys are good. The bottle transition wasn't easy. I just had to dump the bottles in the trash (at 2 years) and then there was no other choice.
Re: Tranisitoning to sippy cups
Im so relieved Im not the only one. They r 13 months and they refuse to drink from it. They simply won’t put the effort in and the thing is i have early intervention coming in and I had to lie that they were kind of starting to use the sipppy cups because they look at my parenting with their judgy eyes. However that isn’t helping anyone so before i fess upto them this monday, i figure i get some tips nad really work on the girls. They told me that both girls should not be drinking anything from the bottle after 1 but I can’t just take that away. I’ll pick up the nuby ones from target and i was up till 3 googling sippy cups and Iam so tempted to order these http://www.tiltycup.com/tilty-quest/50-start-up/109-why-tilty-is-the-best-sippy-cup-ever-part-2 (tilty sippy cups) but i can hear my amis awaz in my head saying humne to tumhe nakhron se nahi paala and u did just fine.
Re: Tranisitoning to sippy cups
Devi, my son still prefers the bottle. I am not overly pushing him. He’s a boy, boys do things slower than girls … BUT, I think the earlier you break the habit of the bottle, the better. You are on the right track. :k:
Re: Tranisitoning to sippy cups
^^ It just isn't working. And the mess.. to chase after them and cleaning up the mess is such a task that sometimes im liek screw it.. ill just give them the bottle.
Re: Tranisitoning to sippy cups
Just wait until they deliberately tip the sippy cup upside down on carpet. ![]()
Re: Tranisitoning to sippy cups
I used the Playtex sippy cups for my daughter when she was a baby, she loved them ..... no mess since they're spill-proof.
