India, Pakistan to Escape Worst of Tropical Cyclone Nilofar

India, Pakistan to Escape Worst of Tropical Cyclone Nilofar

Nilofar reached its peak intensity on Tuesday with maximum sustained winds of nearly 215 kph (135 mph), making Nilofar a very severe cyclonic storm and the equivalent of a minimal Category 4 hurricane in the eastern Pacific or Atlantic basins.Tropical Cyclone Nilofar will be far from the dangerous cyclone it strengthened into earlier this week when it impacts India and Pakistan, but localized downpours are still a threat, however.

Nilofar is now losing its battle with disruptive wind shear (strong winds above the surface) and will continue to dramatically weaken through Friday.
The cyclone will eventually become very disorganized with its showers and thunderstorms getting drawn away from its center.

That shower and thunderstorm activity will stream across far southeastern Pakistan, including Karachi and Hyderabad, and India’s northern Gujarat state Thursday night and Friday.
Widespread life-threatening flooding rain is not anticipated. However, localized downpours can still occur and cause isolated flash flooding.
The greatest opportunity for the downpours will come if Nilofar’s center manages to follow the showers and thunderstorms into Pakistan and India.
Even if this occurs, these areas will escape widespread damaging winds as the cyclone would weaken to a tropical depression before moving inland.
It is also possible that Nilofar’s center could get left behind in the northeastern Arabian Sea through at least the weekend. In this scenario, Nilofar’s center will become nothing more than a swirl of clouds with a few showers and wind less than 40 kph (25 mph) by Sunday.
Despite Nilofar rapidly weakening, rough seas will continue to create dangerous conditions for boaters in the northern Arabian Sea through Friday. Hazards for swimmers will also exist along the coasts of Oman, eastern Iran, Pakistan and northwestern India.
The rough seas danger will diminish this weekend with Nilofar.

Here are the latest updates

  1. Nilofar – listed as a “very severe cyclonic storm” by Indian weather officials – is barreling across the Arabian Sea packing winds of up to 220 kilometres (132 miles) an hour.

  2. The cyclone will weaken substantially as it reaches the coast of Gujarat, according to the Indian Meteorological Department forecast.

  3. Nilofar will “cross the coast as a marginal cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 60-70 kilometers per hour, gusting to 80 kilometers per hour,” the department said on its website.

  4. But officials in Gujarat say they are taking no chances with the storm, which is expected to make landfall in the Kutch district.

  5. Nearly 30,000 people will be shifted from coastal areas to safer places by this evening, officials said.

  10. India, particularly its east coast, and neighbouring Bangladesh are routinely hit by bad storms between April and November that cause deaths and widespread damage to property

Re: Tracking Hurricane NILOFAR..

Heard people are claiming its weakend due to the new slogan , "GoNilofarGo" :)

Re: Tracking Hurricane NILOFAR..

Gotta luv Karachiittes reaction to the cyclone:

Re: Tracking Hurricane NILOFAR..

^^^ According to news, government has told people living near coastal areas to evacuate, but no one want to evacuate ignoring government warnings and directions. Most believe that hurricane Nelofar would not hit Karachi as they think Abduallah Shah Ghazi (RA) would intervene. Many wants to visit Karachi shore to see Nelofar in action.

Sindh Government, instead or directing and relying on government actions, want to rely entirely on Abdullah Shah Ghazi (RA). Agha Siraj Durrani went to the Mazar and prayed (pleaded or requested) to Abdullah Shah Ghazi that he prays to Allah that cyclone threat get averted.

I hope their beliefs are true, but anyhow, it seems that their belief paid off, and now, as the report, hurricane direction has changed and hurricane that could have hit Karachi would miss Karachi.

Cyclone Nilofar: Another Whirlwind of an Event to Head to Karachi’s Beach?

Posted: 10/30/2014 10:40 am EDT Updated: 30 minutes ago

As Cyclone Nilofar, a category 4 super cyclone heads towards the north-eastern coast of the Arabian Sea, Karachiites with their adventure-thrill loving practices, make way towards the extremely popular Karachi beach-front, commonly known as Sea View.
With emergency declared in Karachi, Gwadar along with three other coastal areas, the residents of this city never ever prefer staying indoors, especially when there is a call to stay away from the beach and that too because of a cyclone- when all of a sudden it becomes mandatory for the multitude to set out for the beach on the very day(s) the cyclone is expected to make landfall.

**To say excitement is at its peak would be an understatement. The citizenry has their picnic baskets ready along with their two-wheel rides to even going to the extent of getting coasters or vans booked so entire families can have the privilege to ‘enjoy’ this wrath of nature.
How on earth can a cyclone be enjoyed? Try learning from the overjoyed populace of the ‘City of Lights.’ The authority tries blocking all the major routes leading towards the Arabian waterfront that throngs of people head towards.
**Karachiites and their thirst to enjoy cyclones makes it difficult for the authority that majorly comprises of the Pakistan Coast Guards to efficiently carry out their duties.

The disappointment is massive when families are not allowed to enter the proximity of the shore with signs of disapproval and in worst cases pelting of stones at those who try to bring order and prevent casualties.

What happens when disaster strikes? The same government bodies are blamed and criticized for not carrying out effective measures followed by the infamous sit-ins.

Cyclone Phet of 2010, another CAT 4 cyclone was awaited by a great number of locals with unabated excitement. Relatives, friends, friends of friends and the like, felt immense pride in going to the seaside to merely ‘see’ Phet. Those who couldn’t make it in time to witness the tropical cyclone, missed out a ‘super fun day’ at the beach.
The delirium does not end there. When the broadcast media announced the severity of Phet had lessened tremendously, signs of dismay were easily seen on people’s faces who tried being vocal on screens and had taken time out from their schedules to witness the tidal ferocity.
Cyclone Nilofar so far haslessened in severity. Is it another cyclone that fails the expectations and the always needed pumped up adrenaline levels by a large chunk of Karachiites? Let the upcoming hours decide that.

Re: Tracking Hurricane NILOFAR..

Seems the Sindh government got it right after all and our arm chair pundits in the West didn't :D

Hilarious.

And now god forbid if casualties would happen, then all the critics would blame the govt. Much like the recent drownings at seaview area where ignored the warnings and eventually died, and adminstration got all the blame

Re: Tracking Hurricane NILOFAR..

Brother, you are absolutely right when you mentioned that people ignore the warnings of precaution then complain. But on the other hand, we cannot exonerate the government and administration too, as regardless of the people's attitude, it was their duty to make all precautionary arrangements, what they did not do.

There should be educational program too, and that is also responsibility of government and administration.

Something what people do not understand and it is duty of government as well as administration and religious leaders to make people understand that even for those who have ‘tawakullah’ (complete trust and reliance on Allah), Allah also directs them to take precautions when dealing with possible calamities. Being super cool and super confidence when facing calamities is result of ignorance, arrogance and idiocy, that Islam do not approve.
