I was tracking a priority mail that was to arrive today. I checked the status of it and it says the following:

Status: Notice Left
We attempted to deliver your item at 6:22 PM on August 28, 2007 in XXXX, TX 75xxx and a notice was left. It can be redelivered or picked up at the Post Office. If the item is unclaimed, it will be returned to the sender. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later. ***
I have not received any notice and I was at home at the time of delivery mentioned in this status. Who delivers U.S mail at 6:00 PM anyway? I am puzzled and worried. Has anyone ever had this happened?
The same thing happened to me too about 6 months ago Asif. The incompetent fools at Bell Canada wrote my street address on the package but forgot to write my townhouse/unit number and hence no delivery was possible. My package waited at the post office for a week and was then sent back. I only found out when i had waited too long and called them back a few weeks later.

This is my U.S Passport we are talking about. The envelope contains the Citizenship Certificate too that I submitted at the time of passport application. They better not have messed this up.
There is always a phone number provided if not ring the main contact number usually 1-800 number, give them ur tracking (airway bill) number & advise them about the package how & where to deliver.
Picked up the passport from the post office this morning. Life is good. They said it was a usual status text that appears if they scan the package at the arrival station after hours. Go figure.
