Cops raid Toyota in F1 ‘spy’ probe

Police have raided Toyota’s Formula One factory in Germany on suspicion of industrial espionage involving Ferrari.

One Toyota engineer was reportedly arrested after police searched the aerodynamic division of the team’s factory in Cologne on Friday morning.

Police spokesman Reinhardt Schuettler said: “It’s correct that Toyota was searched and one person was taken into custody.”

Rumors of industrial espionage surfaced in media reports in May because of the apparent similarity of Toyota’s TF103 car to Ferrari’s F2002 model.

According to newspaper Koelner Express, Toyota is suspected of obtaining technical data from Ferrari from an engineer who left the Italian team two years ago.

“Toyota motor sport is not the target of the investigation. It involves an employee of the aerodynamic division,” Toyota Racing team boss Ove Andersson said.

Police reportedly secured computers, technical plans, CD-ROMs and diskettes for evidence.

Toyota employee in ‘spying’ row

Formula One team Toyota are involved in a spying row after police questioned a male employee suspected of betraying his former team Ferrari.

Officers visited the team’s factory in Cologne last week and questioned the man before releasing him.

A court in Modena launched the probe after a tip-off that the man took information from the Ferrari team before his move to Toyota.

Toyota stated their innocence after their employee returned to work.

“Our only involvement in this affair is that the man works for us,” said Toyota spokesman Andrea Ficarelli.

“We have not done anything wrong.”
