Isn't there a PCB policy about players on tour or even on home series not talking to the press :-? I am not criticizing Shoaib; he's too green to know better. But to me Stephen Fleming's approach seems much more professional. Play cricket, since that's what you are there to do. Leave the press interviews and debates for after the tour, so it doesn't break your concentration. Until the ICC comes up again and tells PCB that it has a problem with Shoaib's action, there is no need for him or anyone else on the Pakistani side to bounce the issue around in the press. We blame the English and the Australian tabloids for bringing up non-issues when we are on tour to distract our players, and they certainly do. But it looks like Shoaib does the job on himself rather well! Again, what are the seniors doing :-?
it was nice to c shoaibz return with a bang…pakistani team played well…nz played well 2 but in the end shoaib proved to be a bit 2 much 4 them…however he sould not make such statementz if he really wantz to continue playing 4 pakistan…

Hi Fahd, Well i m not too sure if what Akhtar is doing right or not? I mean being quiet wouldn't help either. Press are there to make controversies out of nothing so if there is a guy breaking the stumps against your team then naturally you will do your best to put the guy off shattering the stumps of your batsmen.
In my opinion Akhtar has done right coming out and telling everyoneelse that he doesn't like being criticized. If he stays quiet then everyone's going to think there is gotta be something suspecious and they'll continue to give him **** about his action.

I see your point, Pagluu. I have his best interests at mind too. You know that cliche: Sticks and stones may hurt my bones, but words will never hurt me :-? As I pointed out, the only time Shoaib and his fan brigade has to worry is when ICC steps into this officially, and man, if they do, I’d be really
http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/mad2.gif
I mean, they’ve already cleared the matter!!!
Anyone has the right to clear his or her name of wrongdoing. But who are we kidding :-? The only reason whoever’s running the story is because they are
http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/crying.gif
babies
http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/smile.gif
And whether Shoaib says this or that, it’s not gonna do him any good. If he keeps quiet, concentrates on the task at hand, and speaks through his performance, he will prevail in a much more conclusive manner. There’s always an element of risk that a young player like him will get distracted because of this, and he’ll play right into his enemies hands
http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/frown.gif
Finally, you know how some sleazy press walas can twist words around. Someone might trick him into saying something he shouldn’t have said, and that’ll cause him more anguish. That’s why usually press contact must usually be approved by the tour manager, coach, and captain. It will just be in his own better interest. That’s just my two cents
lets see how they go in 2nd ODI. Shall razzler continue to bat at 3? or shall we bring in Elahi?

Shoaib Akhtar gets no-balled over Reid claims
Lynn McConnell - 19 February 2001
Controversial Pakistani pace man Shoaib Akhtar needs to polish up his history when he claims that New Zealand match referee John Reid was behind his temporary banning from international cricket last summer.
The Pakistani pace ace ripped through New Zealand in Auckland yesterday to take five wickets for 19 runs, his best return in One-Day Internationals.
However, doubts about the validity of his bowling style surfaced again.
In a press conference which at times verged on the bizarre, Akhtar claimed he had never changed his bowling action, something that had been obvious to all in the audience while by refusing to draw the racist card against John Reid he introduced the subject matter anyway.
What needs to be remembered in this whole saga is that in Perth last year a report was made to the International Cricket Council by Reid, who had been approached by three umpires who stood in the Australia-Pakistan series - Peter Willey (England), Peter Parker and Daryl Hair (both Australia), with concerns about Akhtar's bowling action.
Having received the complaint, Reid then got film together, in the required manner and sent it off to the ICC.
The relevant information was sent to the ICC committee members on the bowling actions committee. Reid was one of those members.
So too were: Michael Holding (West Indies), Kapil Dev (India), Imran Khan (Pakistan), Ranjan Madugalle (Sri Lanka), Bobby Simpson (Australia) and Nigel Plews from England, and representatives from Zimbabwe and South Africa.
A telephone conference call was convened by Sir Clyde Walcott and it was agreed that Akhtar's action justified his suspension for remedial action to be done.
The only person on the committee of nine who did not get involved in the discussion was Imran, who was on holiday and not able to be contacted.
No sooner had the decision been made than the now former president of the ICC, Jagmohan Dalmiya over-ruled the decision and said Akhtar could play in the next ODI.
The committee on bowling actions was then sacked and replaced by a new panel which mainly involved the chief executive's of ICC member countries, although Dayle Hadlee is now New Zealand's member of the panel. He is part of a New Zealand panel on bowler's actions, along with John R Reid, Stephen Boock and Brian Aldridge.
The fact of the matter is that Akhtar was never cleared by the ICC. He was cleared by Dalmiya.
And the ICC panel never clears players. It allows them to bowl again after action has been taken on their bowling style.
If they re-offend, they have to go through the same process again.
Australian captain Steve Waugh referred to the Akhtar incident in his recently published diary of last season, Never Satisfied (Harper Collins), when Dalmiya's decision was based on Akhtar being given a clearance because the deliveries under scrutiny being short-pitched balls which can't be bowled in ODIs.
"I reckon this argument has more holes in it than a block of Swiss cheese.
"The most obvious is that many bowlers still bowl short-pitched stuff in one-day cricket, despite the no-ball threat.
"As well, it is my understanding that most of Shoaib's deliveries that have been examined and questioned have, in fact, been fast yorkers or at least balls of a very full length."
New Zealand players will have some sympathy with Waugh's views.
Akhtar may have hoped that by raising the matter at the first post-match press conference it would disappear.
Chances are that by re-writing history from his own perspective, and admitting that he had made no changes whatsoever to his style, he has opened up the whole case again.

Comments, anyone :-? I have no way of corroborating this column, but it would be kinda hard to put down absolutely incorrect facts like the dissolution of the first committee... Also, regardless of whether Shoaib is chucking or not, I have to agree with Steve Waugh's assessment of Mr. Dalmiya's argument being full of holes. Because of his haste, we might now be in a position where Shoaib actually has not been examined or cleared by a professional committee at the ICC, so these allegations will continue to fly until that process actually happens.
Last, I know most, if not all, Pakistanis and Sri Lankans and many others think Darrel Hair isn't fit to umpire a gali ka match, much less cast aspersions at our beloved players. The argument most often presented is that other respected umpires like Dickie Bird and Steve Bucknor never objected to Murali's action, so why did he :-? I have a problem with this line of arugment. I mean, would you like a cop witnessing a murder to say, well, the other cop is also seeing this but not doing anything about it. Maybe since he thinks it is right, it really is! I mean, he's a post higher than me, so even though I am seeing this, it must be okay. Go on, mate!
I am just playing the Devil's advocate here, but if I were in Darrel Hair's shoes and a few test umpires came to me and said, you know, we aren't all that comfortable with this chap's bowling action; would you mind taking a look at it :-? If I thought there was any doubt, I'd put the evidence together and follow the due process, which he seems to have done. If that's what he thinks he saw, well, he's an umpire and umpires are asked to make judgements. We may or we may not agree with them. I'd put the fault more at the ICC's doorstep. Why didn't they follow due process and get the thing done and over with :-? With ppl like Imran Khan, Kapil Dev, Bobby Simpson, and Michael Holding on the panel, not many ppl would have questioned their decision...
Again, just my two pennies :)
Yaar apnee dou pennies sumbhal kay rukho, 2nd ODI shorow honay walay hay aadhay ghuntay mein. I m worried kyounkay whenever paki is favorites to win and have their rates high (

Classical Pakistani collaspe.
Do we ever learn ?
Little pressure, and we crumble.
I'm sure that first ODI win went to our heads, as it always does.
When I heard Saeed Anwar say that he was expecting to hit huge runs against NZ, I said "Here we go again. Once the show-offs start, our butts get kicked".
Voila.
