touching ears

Ive noticed that many of my dads friends at social gatherings, when they hear something “bad” they say astagfirallah or something and touch thier ears, why do they touch there ears? Anyone know…

Re: touching ears

This should be in Culture forum, as it has pretty much nothing to do with Religion.

As regards touching the ears, I am assuming you are not familiar with culture in Pak schools. Over there, especially in primary grades, when a teacher punishes a pupil, they will ask them to hold their ears and stand on the chair (or in the corner of the class room). Its more like making a spectacle of the misbehaving student. Therefore holding the ear is considered a gesture to symbolize a dreadful punishment.

Its similar to some other gestures we do that symbolize an action, like rolling your arm to indicate that a car window should be rolled down, or spreading your thumb and small finger and bringing it close to your ears to indicate a phone call.

Re: touching ears

Thanks but these werent kids, these were pakistani aunties and uncles, and many different ones I have seen do this, and only do it when someone is telling them bad news , like these people got killed so and so.

Re: touching ears

I am not saying these are kids. I am saying this is a gesture to symbolize punishment. I also explained the origins of the gesture.

Re: touching ears

Do you want to hear the word ‘Biddah’ in this thread? You won’t be disappointed as someone from Waby Army will come and declare it biddah:markooh:haraam very soon.

On the serious note, Faisal has explained the background and reason behind it. It has nothing to do with religion.

Re: touching ears

I put it in this section since they always associate allah when they do it.....sheesh sorry
