Quran 4:43 … if ye are ill or on a journey or one of you cometh from offices of nature or ye have been in contact with women and ye find no water then take for yourselves clean sand or earth and rub therewith your faces and hands…
the verse says that if anyone (obviously a man) has touched a woman, he needs to perform ablution (cleaning/washing) if he has to pray (and similar rule wud apply for other acts of worship that require ablution)…
anyway, the main point is that ‘touching’ a woman, any woman, nullifies the ablution…
the most common meaning of touching is taken as ‘sexual intercouse’…
imam abu hanifa considers touching one’s wife (touching other women is ofcourse out of question) with sexual intent and kissing as the meaning of this…
imam malik considers ‘touching for pleasure’ as the supposed meaning…
imam shaafi considers any contact with the opposite gender as nullification of one’s ablution…
imam ahmed also supports the same…
abdulla bin masood (ra) and abdulla bin umar (ra) had the same view of touching (i.e. the literal meaning)…
there r hadith that tell of the Prophet (saw) kissing his wife and prayng without renewing his ablution…
similarly a narration (although a weak one) reports same of Umar (ra)…
At first thought, I would say it refers to sexual intercourse. Not sure why merely 'touching' your wife, will nullify the wadhoo. Not sure why those very respected scholars decided to go for the very literal definition.
What is the arabic word used in the ayat? For 'contact'?
the root words used is "lams"....
the full word is "laamastum" (if you (plural form) have touched)....
which is also the same word used in 2:237 and all agree that here the "touch" means "sexual intercourse" only and not 'mere touch'....
And intresting that the words are " if "anyone" has touched a woman..." Why was the word 'anyone' used rather than 'if any man has touched a woman..." ?

What of the water?
If you don't find succor in a woman, then maybe you should wash yourself.
From what I understand Christianity has/had similar passages.. that after intercourse one should purify the soul/repent. Lust being one of the biggies some have taken it further to include "improper touching" outside of intercourse. I dunno.. I don't remember how it all goes, maybe someone can correct me on this. But I was wondering if anyone here has seen comparitive interpretations on this?
AAA, the water mentioned is what you clean yourself with if you have done one of those things. If you find no water to clean yourself with... then take for yourselves clean sand or earth and rub therewith your faces and hands

I suppose I was trying make a positive light between men and women.
^
Islam has told us of all things....
it has nistructions for all parts of life....
in common language, its always the "he" who is referred to, hence most of the instructions in the Quran are directed towards the males....
it does not mean that women r not included....
if man touches a woman, the order is the same as that of a woman touching a man....
there is nothing unclean about sleeping, just plain old sleeping, even if its for one second, but it nullifies the ablution....
its all about purification of coul more than the body....

agreed,if after intercourse, if a person feels messy,he /she /it can take a shower...thats common sense....but why you need God to tell you that?

because He does not like unclean people to say salat :-|
Changez payee jaan 'unclean' as what?? for times u do not have water you are allowed to pray after using mud for ablutions even after you've 'touched' a woman.. how does touching mud 'clean' you??
