although my above post was just messing about wit utd and I use the examples of burkina faso in jest. There is a point to be made here. Are we interested in world affiars on our own twrms, or are we interested in the world at large. Are we interested in world events if they directly impact us, or are we interested out of human concern.

as far as lack of knowledge goes, if interest is there, one finds a way to gain knowledge. otherwise one can have access to great wealth ofknowledge but not access it and learn from it due to lack of interest. There are tons of books and publications out there about quiltmaking, but I have no interest in it so I dont bother, and it appears the same is true for world affairs and many people.

Your suggestions are good however.

For most of us (myself included) I suppose initial interest stem from events that impact us directly…(other than catyclismic events such as recent Tsunami)…

but once an interest is sparked can stimulate broader concerns…

I didn’t know what/where/who it was…

I discovered that Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world, Aids is epidemic, and that troubles in bordering Ivory Coast have crept into the region.
