It is hard if you are not determined. But if you are, then it shouldn't be. Imaan in heart plays a very very important role in such situations. I was listening to Anwar Awlaki's lecture yesterday or the day before and he was talking about the verses dealing with alcohol. If a verse about Alcohol telling the believers to leave it would had been revealed first, then it is possible that the people would not have listened. But Allah sent down verses dealing with Jannah & Jahannum until the believers were strong and their hearts were attached to Allah. Then the only thing necessary to stop the believers from Alcohol was a mere verse because by this time, they had imaan in their hearts. Allah knows best!
