Toronto shopping- desi

We are making a trip to toronto this thanksgiving for some shopping for a family wedding. Our friends there mentioned two names oriental fashions and silva. Has any one shopped there? If so what is the range of designs like are they tasteful or more jhatka style? Any ideas of price ranges for wedding wear? Any other pakistani boutiques we should visit?

Re: Toronto shopping- desi

Sonia's Collection is also pretty good. Oriental Fashions is over priced, but they have really nice clothes ... very tasteful. Sonia's is right by Oriental Fashions so you should also check them out. You will have to specifically ask them about their wedding clothes cause they don't keep them on display at the front of the store.

Re: Toronto shopping- desi

Thanks Mehnaz! Hope we can find some nice clothes there.

Re: Toronto shopping- desi

Mehnaz, if you can list shops that are good in Women, Men and Kidz (shalwar kameez) in different areas that would be good. We all have visitors from outside GTA asking for these shops specially near Eid/BaqrEid. It will be really helpful for all of us.

Mississauga (mention the area please)
Albion
Rexdale
Malton (Airport Road)
Brampton
Scarborough
Gerrard (dead) Street

Re: Toronto shopping- desi

i can help too....here's my two cents

Mississauga (mention the area please): oriental costumes
Albion/Rexdale: Aman Fashion, Fine Fabrics
Malton (Airport Road): Used to be Ruby Queen..dont know the name now
Brampton: at Steeles Ave/Torbram Road...lots of good clothing stores there

hope that helps!

Re: Toronto shopping- desi

Yeah, Steeles Avenue and Torbram Road (on Steeles), there is a whole little plaza of desi shops. They are primarily Indian clothes stores, but the clothes aren't bad ... I prefer Sonia's Collection/Oriental Costumes though. I don't know about Malton, Albion or those other areas.

Sonia's/Oriental is, I believe, behind the Famous Players on Dundas at Dundas and the 401.

Re: Toronto shopping- desi

hmmmmmmm whatever happened to kennedy and steels area?

Re: Toronto shopping- desi

So we drive for 10 hours on thanksgiving to make it to Toronto for shaadi shopping only to be greeted by freezing weather the entire weekend! Arrgh. Checked out some of the above listed places, the pakistani clothes are definitely better in fabric and kaam compared to the indian collections which are more in variety but didnt work for us. Funny my aunts thought they would save a bundle shopping in toronto but with the GST and PST the currency difference got made up and i would say we paid the same or more than what we would have in NY. 4 joras after driving 10 hours each way in 4 days not to mention pushy sales ladies at the stores.... ufffff. Im rebelling with the family and ordering online. At the most it will be terrible... i can return it for the cost of regular mail. BEATS the drive and snow hands down!

Re: Toronto shopping- desi

Most desi stores don't charge GST and PST. I'm surprised they charged you. I can totally relate to the pushy sales ladies. I'd started avoiding some stores because of that very reason. Most of 'em, however, were pretty good.

Did you try to bargain? You can usually get a pretty good deal if you buy more than one outfit from the same store.

I'll add to the list as well...
Mississauga - Oriental Costumes, Sonia's Collection, Saba Apparel
Albion - Aman Fashions, Delhi Fashions, Fine Fabrics
Malton (Airport Road) - Raja Fabrics, Libaas of India
Brampton - quite a few stores around Torbram and Steeles. There's also Chunri Creations in west brampton, and another one in the same plaza (I forget the name).

Re: Toronto shopping- desi

Why not you buy your need from Zara collection as i think you will find what ever you want.

Selfridges

Re: Toronto shopping- desi

I think Sonia’s has closed down.. can somebody confirm but I do prefer Orientals, still think its overpriced and last time I went everything seem dated :(( there is a lady in milton called naz fashion bug nice clothes. All the clothes are from Pakistan and quite trendy.
