I think internal purity is much more important then external.
We can compare with wearing good expensive clothes while smellin like ......
ppl will know wat kinda person u really r it might take some time due to the outer shell u r wearin but ur inner self will be known to others.

I think it is important to be BOITH,by purity i mean spiritual purity.Of course you can be internally pure & god will know you by your intentins b/c god knows "ghaeeb" ke baat
However external sign & manifestations like Hijab,modesty ,appropriate behaviour of kindness,concern,politeness ,feminity in case of womn (in koran it says god made man & women diff. for each other)

both r EQUALLY important !!!
The external and the internal are all part of the same body. One affects the other and they can not go without each other. They go hand in hand.
Eg
Praying is internal to the soul but to pray the external has to be clean.
Zakat is an internal issue but to be utilised the state is involoved which then becomes external.
Jihad is an internal emotion but is applied externally.
Praying at home is internal but going to Juma is external...
and the list goes on and on...
