We pick some of the best political thrillers. These films have somehow always enticed the movie buff and actors alike. So much so that even glam doll Katrina Kaif could not resist being a part of one. On June 4, 2010, her film ‘Raajneeti’ releases. It also stars Ranbir Kapoor, Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpayee, Naseeruddin Shah. Let’s take a look at some of the other Hindi films based on politics.
Sarkar Raj
Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Sarkar Raj’ was a sequel to ‘Sarkar’ and starred Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. It was an extension to the story of Subhash Nagre’s political clout but with more focus on his son Shankar and daughter-in-law Anita Rajan. But the sequel was not inspired from ‘The Godfather’, but rather from real happenings in India’s political life.

Rann
Another one from Ram Gopal Varma’s stable, this film is actually based on the war of media barons and the loss of ethics and objectivity. Of course, the story shows a strong nexus between politics and the press.
Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi
Chitrangda Singh’s debut film directed by Sudhir Mishra might be more famous for her hot quotient, but it is a poignant tale of three college students in the Emergency era caught between politics, ambition and of course, love.
Yuva
Although the film did not see commercial success, Mani Ratnam’s saga of youngsters and politics in Kolkata was a treat to watch. Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji were particularly praised for this film, apart from Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi, Kareena Kapoor and Esha Deol. The Tamil version was based in Chennai.
Gulaal
Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gulaal’ had a completely different and gory take on north Indian politics involving students.

Aandhi
Now this one could be compared to ‘Raajneeti’. Directed by Gulzar, ‘Aandhi’ was also allegedly based on the story of a member of the Gandhi family - a former PM of India. The film was banned for this reason during the Emergency. But it was also inspired by politico freedom fighter Tarkeshwari Sinha.

Nayak
True to director Shankar’s style, ‘Nayak: The Real Hero’ was the story of how a common man (in this case, reporter) fights the system when given a chance to be in the chief minister’s chair for a day. Anil Kapoor played the lead, with Rani Mukerji opposite her. The film was a hit.

One has seen countless ‘honest cop fighting the system’ films, but director E. Niwas’ 1999 film ‘Shool’ really stood out, and so did Manoj Bajpai’s performance in the lead role of Inspector Samar Pratap Singh.

Gulzar seems to be a pro at politics. ‘Hu Tu Tu’ starring Suniel Shetty and Tabu had political undertones.
Satta
Madhur Bhandarkar’s film ‘Satta’ was a socio-political thriller. It had career best performances by Raveena Tandon and Atul Kulkarni.
