Salil Chowdhary was a surprise pick by someone like Bimal Roy in ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ but what opened him doors of success was ‘Madhumati’. How was he? Well.. He was different. He left the mark in time when SD, Anil Biswas, Madan Mohan, Shankar-Jaikishen were around. He faded in 70’s despite hits like ‘Anand’,‘chhhoti si baat’.
My choice
-
Bichhuaa (madhumati)
-
O sajana .. barakha bahaar aayi (Parakh, perhaps one of Lata’s best)
-
Kahin door jab din dhal jaye (Anand)
-
Aansoo samajh ke kyu mujhe (Chaya)
-
Guzar jaye din din din (Annadata, mark the rhydhm and how scale changes progressively, quite an experiment that only Kishore could pull of)
-
Jaan-e-man Jaan-e-man (chhoti si baat)
-
Halke halke chalo saanware (taangewali)
-
tasweer teri dil mein (maya)
-
Zulmi sang aankh ladi (Madhumati)
-
saathi re.. tujh bin jiya udaas re (Poonam ki raat)
I have not included ‘itna na mujhse tu pyar badha’ (chaya) and ‘musam beeta jaye’ (do beegha zameen) due to objections of plagiarism.
Notables would be ‘Madhumati’, ‘Jaagte raho’, ‘chhya’ ‘maya’ ‘mere apane’ ‘chhoti si baat’ ‘rajanigandha’.
