** Million dollar baby **

Tooba Siddiqui is the hottest young model around and those who are in the know can’t get enough of her vivacious and feisty aura, both on and off the ramp

By Ahmer Ashraf

She’s naughty, social, fun and displays all the subtle graceful nuances it takes to be a model. With the right attitude, she also knows how to cash in on it. Not only does the fashion circle know this girl but also through her carefully culled advertisement campaigns, demanding acting projects and eye catching shoots, she has gained mass popularity. Some know her as the Fair and Lovely girl. And those who are not familiar with her to date have started to know her as the Boom Boom girl with the new Gul Ahmed ad heavily rotating on the airwaves. Tooba, brimming with self confidence and with oodles of with attitude brings to life the golden Nazia Hasan ditty, ‘Boom Boom’. The commercial is groundbreaking. It is talked about for its sleek treatment, different concept and throws into national consciousness a girl called Tooba.

Tooba made her way into the industry almost five years ago with a shoot for Instep. Tariq Amin was the stylist and Ather Shahzad, the photographers. An acknowledged Isloo tomboy, she was handpicked by Tariq for this shoot. “It was actually Tariq who told me to model, somehow he could see the model in me,” says Tooba. Unfortunately, since those halcyon days Tariq has hardly worked with Tooba – some sight personal differences, some say it was a clash of interests – and this very personal tiff led to a parting of ways that became a huge obstacle in her professional life. As a result of the falling out with Tariq, Tooba has rarely worked with the top fashion choreographer of our country Frieha Altaf as the choreographer works mainly with Tariq on her shows. Instep contacted Frieha to puzzle this one out and she was all praise for Tooba and said she thought she was one of the best models around. “She’s doing great these days, I think she’s brilliant,” says Frieha. “I think she has the right attitude, she’s great on the ramp, even though she doesn’t have the height to be a supermodel but her attitude works for her,” says Frieha, although she does add a cautionary note that because of Tooba’s lack of height she is not an automatic choice for the ramp. “I don’t care agar kisi ki kisi say nahi banti (I don’t care if someone gets along with the a person or not). All I care about is my work, but this issue has caused some problem at times, like once I had to call Tooba to tell her that I couldn’t take her in my show. But here it’s not Tariq’s choice, it’s usually the clients’. When I give the client a choice of Tooba or Tariq, the client prefers the makeup artist,” Frieha tries to explain. But why would one come to a point where they have to make a choice between two talented people? This is something one fails to understand. Frieha ends her statement saying, “If I were to give my opinion, I would say that Tooba is one of the top five girls this year.” When I contacted Tariq Amin he had nothing to say. It’s unfortunate that personal clashes should have such a profound effect on one’s professional life. But even this doesn’t serve to drag Tooba down. She tosses the words “childish behaviour” blithely into the air and throws down the gauntlet. “If you call yourself professional then why don’t you act like one too?”

Few deny that Tooba is perfect for the ramp. Despite being lissome rather than statuesque, Tooba rules fashion shows through her aggressive walk. Fashion choreographer Imran Kureishi agrees, saying, “Tooba is doing very well, she is a great ramp model. Whether she is on the ramp or in front of the flash, she knows how to handle both. On top of that, despite spending some time in the industry, she is no hassle, extremely professional and fun to work with girl.” Tooba is praised often for her admirable confidence. She knows how to communicate with the audience while on the ramp, an ingredient most new models lack. “I have learnt it over time but I had this confidence of going out in front of the people and doing my thing since childhood,” she asserts and that’s perhaps the confidence which has helped her come up and get noticed in the industry.

Though, like most, modelling started as a hobby for Tooba and she wasn’t really serious about taking it up as a career. But once in, she never looked back. Tooba was extremely consistent about her work. She describes her four years in the industry as “hard struggle”, “I moved to Karachi to bag bigger projects and then most of the work happens here so I couldn’t stay back with family and continue working from Islamabad,” she says. Around three years ago, Tooba landed in the city of opportunities and her professional life kick started. ** One of her initial projects in Karachi was a Fakhr–e–Alam music video, ‘Husn Walo’**, with Mubashir Khan and Fayez Agariah taking care of the costumes and styling. The video had a lot to do with fashion and Tooba had to walk the ramp in it. She did a very good job too.

In Karachi, life became a little less ordinary for her, both in personal and professional aspects. “When I came to Karachi, I looked at my life with a different perspective, it was no more like working just for pocket money. I wasn’t living with my parents anymore. I had hardly any support here; I stayed with friends and managed on my own. I had a taste of independent life, it was difficult to adjust but I knew I would fit in,” she comments. It is a fact that Karachi has more opportunities for work and the fashion and media industry has gone through a boom lately. Regarding work, Tooba’s next statement makes perfect sense, “It was not difficult finding work in Karachi. I never run after work, you just have to know how to play your cards right, you have the face and the attitude, you get it all,” remarks Tooba.

Tooba was noticed through her shows with Imran Kureishi and Hasan Sheheryar Yasin, her only two entrees to the ramp since Frieha wouldn’t or couldn’t work with her. She did numerous fashion shoots with almost all the top designers, with the bulk of her work coming from established designers like Rizwan Beyg, Deepak Perwani, Maria B and lately Nomi Ansari. Tooba was a constant in print since she came to Karachi. Says Rizwan Beyg, “She is versatile, fun, energetic and playful. Tooba is the perfect model to showcase casual young fashion.” Deepak who has also used Tooba for many of his shoots, such as the one for Instep 2004–5 fall/winter collection, thinks she is a good model. “Ravishing, sexy and super cool,” is his verdict. Nomi Ansari is another designer who has worked a lot with Tooba, so much so that she made it on Nomi’s bags as well. Nomi describes her as “talented, versatile and hot”. Though there are various interesting shoots she did, her shoot for Maria B. was a stunner where she was wildly styled playing with a leopard. “It was not a dog, it was a leopard,” laughs Tooba. “It takes guts to shoot with one and I managed,” she adds.

Along with her fashion assignments, which include shows and shoots, she continues working for commercials and television plays as well. Her first ad was with Asad–ul–Haq for Nescafe. Talking about her first commercial project, she says, “It was so natural and I was required to be myself. So all went well, and then Asad is a really good director; he takes the best from you.” It is a fact that you can’t survive on fashion projects alone; commercials are what keep the money flowing for models. Agrees Tooba, “You have to do commercials for money. One thing that I’m proud of is that I haven’t done a single bad commercial.” Adding, “When you have to sell, why not sell for good products?” And she is hundred percent right. Models have to be more careful in choosing the products they endorse, as bad commercials earn you a bad image.

Tooba’s acting career started while she was in Islamabad, her first play was directed by Rana Sheikh and produced by Sultana Siddiqui. Tooba was lucky in the sense that her first projects in acting, modelling and commercials were with the top names in the industry. Tariq did her first fashion shoot; her first acting assignment was with Sultana and first ad with Asad.

Though, Tooba has tried her hand at everything, from commercials, acting and modelling, her personal favourite remains the ramp. “Not that I only like fashion, acting and fashion go hand in hand for me, but ramp gives me a high,” she confesses. “I love performing, perhaps that’s why I am a good dancer too. I enjoy doing it,” she adds.

Tooba is the perfect definition of a wild girl – restless and always up to a challenge. This is one reason why she is talked about more, for good or bad alike. “It’s in my nature, I like to take up challenges which might shock people but I don’t intend to do so. I just do everything for myself, if I want to do something, I’ll go ahead with it, no matter what others think,” says an undeniably headstrong Tooba.

One usually finds Tooba in trendy attire and not surprisingly for a fashion model she has her own distinct style. With this heavy portfolio and her sassy attitude, it is obvious that Tooba is here to stay and scale the modelling heights despite the pettiness that is so much a part of the system. For this is one baby who has her eyes focussed on the million dollars who laughs in the face of danger and who dares to flout the meaningless diktats of the fashion world and still come out on top.
