The definition of Courage and tolerance changes from culture to culture. Picking up a gun and shooting some person or living entity may be considered as courageous and daring act in one culture, but this would be treated as a heinous crime and unjustified at all in other culture.
Religion also plays important role in defining these traits. In Pakistan, majority has failed (or portrayed as failed) to display the tolerance and minority felt threatened to express its views, because they don't find courage to coup with the intolerance that is now norm of the day.

Beside that courage and tolerance are global trait in Western society… The concept of minority is not like South Asian treatment… Rights, criticism are given to every individual…
However… Western society have some valid concern on religious tolerance… That is only weak point where they do injustice… but that is not widely appreciated in West itself… Situation is quite well than decade ago…
On the other hand… If we look at his writing… It smells that our society always less tolerant…
For courage… Yeh gardan sirf us waqt hi jhukhay gi jab main ghalti par honga…

Which western society you are referring with absolute tolerance and courage. Just look at treatment meted out by Muslims post 9/11 and the reaction of masses in west when Muslim countries were attacked by uncle SAM.
