To what extent has the traditional male role changed in the last 20 years?

Or has it even? Do you sense a change?

role from whose POV?

Re: To what extent has the traditional male role changed in the last 20 years?

I don't think it has. The only role that appears to be changing is the female one, women these days are not as content to sit at home as women from the previous generation. The men however still have the same responsibility, being the breadwinner and supporting their family. And I don't see that changing any time soon.

Re: To what extent has the traditional male role changed in the last 20 years?

It depends really, in a lot of undeveloped countries the roles have changed very little, but they have had to in more developed countries. I know in the uk 20-30 years ago it was normal for women to stay at home and you could easily raise a family on 1 income. Now you have to have a very good job in order to pay a mortgage, run 2 cars and feed a family on only 1 income. Women have kind of lost the right to stay at home and unless you are willing to live with your inlaws it is too expensive for most families to have one partner economically inactive. Even single people struggle, 10-15 years ago you could get a mortgage with a 'middle income' wage and buy a house on your own, now you have to have 2 'middle income' wages just to get a mortgage. Even english people are living with their parents for longer.

I agree with SaraB. It is just too hard for a family to survive on one income in the west, especially when you consider mortgages and sending your kids to university. In fact I'd say it is just as hard here in Pakistan given the low income levels, except family generally tends to support you more here, but you can see a lot of women joining the workforce here for that reason since one income is simply not enough to give your kids a decent education given the rising cost of private schooling.

'traditional role' is 'traditional' which means it doesn't change.....

Re: To what extent has the traditional male role changed in the last 20 years?

of course, it has changed and it has been changing constantly. i've seen men were sole earners but now wives make money, sometimes more than their husbands. i have also seen men whose decisions could never be challenged, now i see men renegading on their own decisions. i've seen men beat up their wives, now often they are beaten up :D
