To use or not to use!?

Okay, so once in a blue moon I like to make fried potato chips for myself and my husband dipped in besan and other spices. But I have not used my besan for about a month. I cut the potatoes in circles already but then took out the besan and gasp there was some type of web in it and I wiped it off and poured the besan in a bowl and added spices then looked in the bag and saw some type of small worm in it!! Should I continue to use it or throw it out completely? Thanks!

Re: To use or not to use!?

I am ashamed at myself for not only not using the besan for a long time but also ignoring it to the point that it had any disgusting things in it at all. Usually I make sure all my food products are covered entirely. This time I didn't do a good job.

Re: To use or not to use!?

My better instincts are telling me not too use it..sigh I don't know what to do now. I will just fry the potatoes without besan. It'll have to be done, I don't want to risk getting my husband or myself sick. Wait, will flour work? I'll try a little..

Re: To use or not to use!?

I wouldn't use it and won't recommend you to use it as well. You don't want to poison yourself, do you? It might not be something serious but it might as well be.. no need to take avoidable risks ..

you can use corn flour.my mother always keep baisan/plain flour sooji(semolina) in the fridge.so whenever we use it there isn't any worm, beetle or web......etc.

Re: To use or not to use!?

Ok good question, I was thinking of opening a thread about this. First of all, I would not use the besan as there was a worm in it, throw it away, its not healthy anymore.

Now to my question, yesterday I wanted to make gulab janum, I needed sooji for my recipe, so I take out the packet, it was covered but then it had the worms in it, I threw it away asap. What if I take air-tight containers, will it help to preserve things like flour, corn flour, sooji for longer, I don't want to store it in the fridge, so I ask this before I invest in some good air-tight containers?

Re: To use or not to use!?

are they no good in the fridge?

Re: To use or not to use!?

and ewwww... are u guys talking abt worms worms like the ones in the ground or like the desi versions of worms...like, "daant mein keeray (cavitiies)"???

I don't know, never seen sooji or maida in the fridge ??

Well the sooji was at the most top selve, so I forgat about it till I needed it! Dont tell me you never had them in your kitchen stuff? they are white and yucky.

Re: To use or not to use!?

Re: To use or not to use!?

I have space in my fridge so I keep these things there..last for months. If you have a space issue air tight containers might work as well. It's quite hot where I live so I don't take chances.

i keep them in my fridgez door pockets.

Re: To use or not to use!?

yeah i think air tight containers help quite a bit ..... but you still need to store such stuff in areas of less moisture or else they will go bad ...

and Phooljari, never ever use stuff that has keray in it ... it can really poison you and your family ... just throw it away at first opportunity... and you know you mentioned that you cleaned the web and poured a bit of it ... next time just to be on the safer side , if you see a web in anything , throw it away immediately...

My friends family got food poisoned once ... and they went through a really difficult time ... its little things that matter... she cooked her food that day in onions that were borderline off ... she tells me now that when she was chopping them, she could feel the smell wasnt the same as the usual onions ... she still carried on thinking it will be fine when its fried ... but actually it food poisoned her whole family...

so be very very careful with these things ...

Re: To use or not to use!?

.. also one more thing guys , even water bottles kept in the fridge for longer then 2 days can be dangerous ... it can poison you as well .. so I suggest always try to change the water in the water bottles every alternative day , better still if you can fill your bottles daily...

Just thought to mention it as many people dont know they can get water poisoned as well ...

^ then what about water dispensers?

Re: To use or not to use!?

Theway, I dunno really about water dispensers , but here in the UK, mostly the GP's tell us to try to use fresh water as much as possible rather then storing them in bottles for long in the fridge ...

I suppose for water dispensers you gotta ensure the cleaners clean the filters properly and the water bottle is used up in a few days rather then lingering on for weeks...

Thats what we do in the office , the cleaner is asked to clean the filters every alternate day...

I do believe they is referring to maggots.

I opened a brand new sack of Tilda Basmati once. It was CRAWLING WITH WHITE MAGGOTS. It looked like the rice was alive and crawling around. Also had webby stuff around it.

I was horrified. Husband had to seal it in a bin liner and chuck it out. I shudder at the thought again. Urrrrrrrghhhhhhhh!!!!

Don't use webby / maggotty food stuffs, please!
