To love your language

I have a few 2nd-cousins (or maybe they are 3rd-cousins) who are Pathans & one thing I have noticed is that all their kids know Pusto. Regardless of where they live … England, Karachi, US or anywhere else in the world.

Now, I only know one family among all the punjabi friends & cousins that I have who taught their children punjabi & urdu even though they were born in US!! When their kids speak punjabi, it has no accent & they have used punjabi words that I have never heard of.

Another family friend of ours who is a punjabi married into the pathans. Now, his kids know pusto & that’s what they speak to their Mom and a little bit of urdu that they speak to everyone else. It’s great!!

There might be other reasons but I think it also shows self confidence & emphasis on culture among the different ethnic groups in Pakistan.

p.s: Yeah, it is related to my thread in Shor Sharaba.

All my cousins speak their father’s language (Hindko or Punjabi or Pukhto) perfectly, but none of them can speak perfect Urdu like my brothers and me, even the ones in Pakistan have ‘village’ accents.

For marriage I have the choice between two girls a Punjabi speaking one and a Hindko/Pukhto speaking one, I lean a bit more towards the first one but language is a bit of a dilemma she’ll be speaking Mahji and I’ll be speaking Hindko so what do our kids speak? I don’t want them to have to learn two languages and I’m not going to give up Hindko for anything other than Urdu, maybe we can just stick to Urdu. Urdu is a nice language and a solution for those in my situation I don’t see why all Pakistanis don’t speak it.

Are you from Jhang?

They say Pasto in Jhangvi, lol it’s so funny in a cute kinda way. :rotfl:

We were there once and speaking in Hindko (zameen aasmaan ka difference) and this guy gets confused and said “Tussi Kabul al aaey o te pasto bullenday paey o?” I’m like no mate we aint Kabulis and it’s not Pasto it’s Pashto. :smack:

Dur dur koRa, you are from Jhang/Sarghoda aren’t you? I remember you posting something about letters to Rabwah getting lost in the post. I miss that place.
