To All the Cat Owners

I want a little cat of my own. Kitten, cat, I don’t think I am too picky at this moment.

I have read the Cat for Dummies (because that was the only book that I could think of), and have heard the cat tales from my khala. But I need to know, well, what I should know about having a cat. You know, the food, the fun, the taking care, the pickiness, etc etc. Like, should the cat have its own room at night, umm, the bathing and stuff, etc.

Personal stories appreciated.

Re: To All the Cat Owners

Having been a cat owner all my life, I think I am the most qualified here to answer this question...

Unlike other animals, which are mostly emotionless creations, cats are very similar to people...

A very famous writer whose name I forget said, 'A dog is a dog and a bird is a bird but a cat is a person..."

Cats have emotions and they display it better than any animals except the primates and you don't want them...(I know, I had a monkey too...:))

Cats require the least amount of care as far as mammals are concerned...

They say It's good for the heart to pet a cat or watch an aquarium...

Buy a flea collar first of all...Cats pick up ticks and fleas magically...

I was opposed to it at first, but have your cat spayed or neutered, depending...

Make sure when you pick a cat to squeeze lightly its ribcage...The more soft and flexible the bones are, the more better temperament the cat will have...(Don't squeeze too hard)...

Cats usually make their own room to sleep...

More later on...

Re: To All the Cat Owners

Make sure you or anyone in the house isnt allergic to it.

Re: To All the Cat Owners

well i dont have a pussy but from what i hear it gets u cranky every month or so...and also makes u very mentally unstable....makes u an excessive spender (ofcourse of someone elses bucks)...makes u yearn for unecessary attention/affection..

so yea stay away frm getting a pussy cat..

Re: To All the Cat Owners

there is wayyyyyyyyy too much info...

for food... they will eat pretty much anything.... mine even eat eggs and rice.. i asked the vet if this would harm the kittens in anyway.. he said no. just dotn feed them the same thing everyday .. unless its proper cat food.. if u do buy cat food. remember that there are seperate packets or tins for kittens and cats... milk and water kept in clean bowls is a must...

fun... mine play with a string, wind up toys that dont make loud noise (cats hate noise)... balls... when they are jus kittens.. i taught em how to climb trees too.. take a stick.. and drag it up the tree branches from root to however up u wanna go... cats will follow anything that moves slowly.. endless hours of fun :D (but be prepared to climb the tree and bring the kitten back down)...

cats are easier to take care of then kittens (altho all my cats i have had sicne they were born).. the reason being, kittens catch virus', diseases much more easily than cats.. so be prepared to take them to the vet and spend lots of $$$...
my vet knew i was a mother on welfare (my kittens being my kids)... he gave me alternatives to animal medicine.. human medicine worked wonders!! amoxil is a great antibiotic.... human eye drops clears up any eye probs ure cat may have... hehe.. half the price of animal medicine.. and they all work!

for sleeping.. cats want a dark and quiet room... and make it cosy.. i cut out my old blanket, put it in a tub.. and that is where tehy all sleep...

bathing a kitten is much easier than a cat.. it will take practice... dont bother buyin the animal shampoo crap.. just buy soem cheap shampoo and off u go... get a used toothbrush to scrub the nose (should be soft).. and paws and claws... its better to fill the sink first.. with warm water and shampoo... that way u dont havta deal with a runnin away cat.. and a sink u still need to fill.. and shampoo u still need to put on.. hehe....

pickiness.. persians are teh worst kind u can come across.. my persian was such a khabees.. wouldnt have the same food served to him twice (in the same day).. and wouldnt budge!! wouldnt play.. catch anything... just a big pce of meat and fur lying around doing ZIP!.. if u want fun.. then buy a siamese. or there is this other bread that is both furry and very active. its from the fox family... ure pet store should know.. i forgot the name... very caring and lovable too... this kind actually cares bout u :D (cuz ususally cats have an attitude problem)... i guess different breeds have diff characterisitics.. wherevever u buy ure kitten from.. ask them the kind and what are their personalities like.... my persian didnt give a crap when i ignored him for a day.. my fox like kitten didnt eat for a day when Iignored her.. didnt play didnt eat didnt do anything.. it was that sad.. bechari ... :(
hmm hmmm.. what else.. hmmmm... I dont know where u live... have u given thought to taking in a stray? all my kittens/cats have been strays... its just so much more fun.. lots of diff breeds... diff kinda personalities.. hehe... and when they fight and play with each other.. then sleep together all cuddled up... so fulfilling... sob sob

Re: To All the Cat Owners

oh and i hope u dont have allergies.. verna u’ll be like me.. poppin allergy pills daily.. im takin homeo medicine now.. its great.. i can have my cats and my leak-proof nose

get a female cat.. its muchhhh better! .. male cats like to mark their territory which will make ure house stink baddd! .. and unless u get him neutered.. he will wanna go out and get into fights.. look for female cats to get it on with… … no such issues with female cats .. unless they get preg.. and well …then.. u got a whole new issue to deal with

Re: To All the Cat Owners

get a kitten. they are hyper and curious little things. Cats tend to laze around and come when they want food or stroking. very selfish things. also, get a toilet trained one. our cat attempts to breaks the door down at night when it needs to go. then it covers the stuff with mud. how sweet.

food wise, cat food stinks like anything so make sure u keep it stored outdoors. Oh, dont leave any chicken or meat uncovered in the kitchen, they will attempt to eat it. bathe them regularly but once they get fleas, get them put down. joke.

once a cat owner you'll get cat visitors. ours once brought home very strange company. it fought like anything with our cat. we attempted to let out through the front, it climbed to the back from the roof. we left it outside, it came through a small open window, we left it 2 miles away, we still see it parading up an down our street. we called it riaz basra, the lil terrorist.

Re: To All the Cat Owners

omg omg omg omg i WUV you guys! this is awesome stuff!

so the thing about the allergies…no one in my home is allergic to any kind of pet. yaay! my mom is allergic to aspirin, and since cats aren’t made of aspirin, i don’t think i have to worry about that. :stuck_out_tongue:

also, i was thinking about a female cat as well. (and i was going to ask about which gender is better). so that solves that issue.

Khawa…i live in brampton. and the only cat i have seen is probably the one that used to belong to the previous owners of our house. scared the beejeezus out of my brother and i one late night. lol. so, i think i am going to opt for an animal shelter cat. i think for a nominal fee (110) they do the whole spaying/neutring, and checkup and the fancy chip they get in and all that.

since i am at uni most of the time, and my ammi has other stuff to do, and my bro (though he says he is not a cat lover… ) has his computer, i don’t think i am going to go for a kitten. like you guys said, it is hyper, and i don’t think i am ready for chasing a ball of fur around my house.

also, about the toilet training thingy…what if the cat isn’t t-trained…how do you go about it?

and also, say the cat i get, and i want it to be an indoor cat, but is it possible that the cat i get was a mix of both. how to make it be an indoor cat?

and the other stuff that i remember, i’ll add on

Re: To All the Cat Owners

for poop training… i dont know.. i have never had to train any of them.. just put a cat litter… put it in there.. show it that its easy to dig… and that is where they will go.. cats i think are born with that instinct.. to dig and poop and then cover up… their ammi’s arent teaching them , im positive bout that! … even when i didnt have the cat litter (im allergic so keep my cats outside)… and they would come in for a bit.. the door would be closed so where to go??? they would get into one of mom’s plant pots and do their business there… . so no issues !

as for the indoor outdoor issue.. if u get ure billa fixed.. shouldnt be a prob, just a bit of gettin used to.. as for female cats.. no issues whatsoever… again.. just a bit of getting used to.. u can always take it outside in ure lawn.. play with it a bit…
