Titli (2002) - The First Monsoon Day

A Bengali movie with English subtitles. Picked this one up on the weekend, it was highly recommended by a friend. I was intrigued by the story - Titli, a teenager has a crush on a twice-her-age filmstar and wants to marry him. It is a sensitive portayal of a mother-daughter relationship, of romance broken, of a girl’s coming of age. An artsy film, somewhat reminiscent of Ijaazat. The cinematography is breath-taking with beautiful shots of Darjeeling, its famous toy train, the tea gardens, the mist and the forests (think Araadhna - Mere Sapnon Ki Rani Kab Aayegi Tu). Nature is beautifully woven with melody as Aparna Sen recites beautiful poetry from Tagore’s Sanchayita and sings an enchanting Rabindrasangeet. Cast- Aparna Sen, Konkona Sen-Sharma, Mithun Chakraborty, all have given amazing performances. Don’t miss this amazing movie, it’s one you’ll want to keep!

First Bengali film I watched, it was clean and really good. Titli comes from the makers of Chokher-Bali and Utsab. Has anyone seen the other two? Did you like them?
