What was the criteria by British Empire for giving a person title of Sir?

Was the criteria same in England and their colonies like India?

For the females, the title was "Dame" which is the female title rank equivalent to "Sir".:)

Did they give any female of subcontinent this title. It seems for them all sub-continent ladies were 'Ma'is' :D

Was Khan the equivalent of Sir? Like Khan Liaquat ali Khan

I think 'Khan Bahadur' was a title given by British Empire to their loyal people and Khan as in Liaquat Ali Khan was a customary title used by Indian Jageerdaars, even before the arrival of East India Company.

Well the difference is SR is a massive douche...
