Tips on Buying Laptops

:salam:

This was posted on my MSA list. I thought it might help folks here.

                   1. If you are going to carry around a lot, then the weight is essential.

It kills you if heavy. I carry it around from lecture to lecture and I
wory about my back. I would sacrifice features for weight in that case.

  1. IBM Thinkpads are way better than most hp, Compaq, Tishiba ones I
    used.

  2. If you have a choice and money, pick centrino chips not Pentium. The
speed for Centrino is usually half of what it really is; I mean 1.5 GHz is
    equivalent to 3 GHz Pentium.

  3. Get one with Wirless and 1394.

  4. CD/DVD reader writer (better if it writes DVD too).

  5. Never mind what touchpad they use; get the small Microsoft wirless
mouse from Costco for $29; it is very cute and is USB with no wires.

  6. Look at the battery duration; a 2.5 hours and less is little; 4 hours
and up is excellent if you travel a lot or work under the trees.

  7. Buy a nice cushy carrying case for it wiht thick sides and pads that
you can appreciate when you drop it.

  8. Many features are standard now and no need to list them here.

  9. Go for screen at least 15".

  10. Do not buy the wide screen ones (wide and not high).

  11. At least 512 MB RAM and 30 GB hard drive.

  12. If the Tablet-PC was rigid enough I would tell you to buy it but it is
not really that great yet even though it is cute for teaching.

  13. Look at the COSTCO sales (Costco.com) and Dell sales (link is on
MSN.COM); they are pretty good. The COSTCO ones are good because you can
always return it if it breaks.

Re: Tips on Buying Laptops

my laptop has all these features :k:

Re: Tips on Buying Laptops

well sony beats ibm in all ways you look at it. and my toshiba ways less then the think pad and has 1.6 centrino, 80 gb hard drive, 512 ram, dvd rw, as we all know if its a centrino it has to have wireless internet and all that good stuff too. think pads are really not worth buying if you look at it there is no resale value on it as for compaq, hp, toshiba, sony they all carry high resale

Re: Tips on Buying Laptops

Consider Fujitsu laptops. They are not that advertised but they're proving to be workhorses.

Re: Tips on Buying Laptops

We should have some prices here too.

Re: Tips on Buying Laptops

why atleast 15", and why not wide screen? if you need extreme portability, get a 12" widescreen.

why get a cd/dvd writer on a laptop unless u absolutely need it? get a plain dvd rom and save half a pound of lugging.

also if you dont plan on moving your laptop from your room(sounds lame, but i know too many ppl who do this), just get urself a desktop and save yourself a whole bunch of money!!
