Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

Based on my extensive experience dealing with diff designers, I thought of making this topic where i can share some bridal wear shopping tips with you guys :).

  • know your style, your choice and select 4-5 designs based on it. Do a little research on their prices and service before you opt for any designer.

  • do give the selected designers a visit before you finalise your dress, this to avoid regretting later that i could have gotten that instead of this.

  • try your best to select your bridal from a designer from whom u can also select few dresses for your trousseau. this wl help you get better price cuz you are gonna be getting a package price from them. You can have your family n cousins order from them too as they wl get a better price too.

  • don’t buy the whole trousseau from the same designer. Have variety.

  • try to buy your baraat and valima outfits from diff designers so that there is no similarity watsoever.

  • NEVER give the designers the right date of your wedding cuz they wl get lazy, its always better to have yr order a month or more before so if there are any changes to made or anything that they have not done rite then u can hve time for that.

that’s it for now…i’ll keep adding more as i recall. Anybody else who has some tips to share, pls add on  hope it helps all the lovely brides :).

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

you are most welcome :)

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

Great tips Maham - thanks so much for this! Question - are there certain designers that you really liked while you were shopping? I'm assuming you shopped in Lahore? (taking things like service, good value for money, their designs, satisfaction with the end result etc into account)

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

Very useful tips for future gup-brides. So glad you shared.

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

Nice post Maham - i like the idea of not telling designers when the actual wedding is! Will keep that im mind!! :)

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

What about bargaining, Maham? How important is bargaining with the designers to lower the price on the outfit? Also, any tips / tricks for doing this?

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

what designers did u work with?

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

:)

Yes i shopped in lahore and i do have my favorite designers but i wl tell you something, there's a diff between a designers work you find the best and a designer you find the best to buy from :) Lol, if you know what i mean. Like I really like Nilofer Shahid's stuff, not all but most i can relate to BUT she's darn expensive so i havent ever bought anything from her. I still remember about 5-6 years ago i really liked this one shalwar kameez she had with velvet kaam done on it and i wanted that so badly but it was for 85k so i didnt buy it esp since i was in my teens then and it would have been stupid to buy something that expensive and heavy which i wudnt have used even a single time more. And this time again, while shopping for my 2nd brother's bride NS was a stop we made and i fell in love with 2 of her bridals but nobody else in the family liked it inluding the bride as they thought it was too multi color and too bold in color and funkiness for them but its something i would have pickd for my bridal. That's why my mom's already pareshan and says that she better keep enough money aside for my funky bridal, lol.

**Mehdi **is a good designer and the best thing about him is that he doesnt copy anyone and has quite a distinct style of his own. He's also very nice with us since we have been his regular customer too BUT yes be careful with order time with him. He can be lazy so give him enough time and if you really want a magical bridal from him and you have an open budget then he wl do wonders for you :).

Kamiyar Rokni is also quite creative but i think he wl take some time to market himself more and perhaps venture out more. He is not a people's person, he is like a true artist. He is someone whose work i totally can relate to, he's bold, funky and creative and that's how i like my clothes to be.

These three designers along with Sehyr Saigol, whose work i havent seen personally but only in mags and luvd it, are the ones i have shortlisted for myself once i need to do bridal shopping :)

But i should definately mention Karma here for trousseau wear and now even you can pick stuff from their store karma pink and its quite affordable too. I wouldnt pick karma for my bridal because i dont find their work very unique, maybe i own too much of karma outfits now and have known them so well to actually find something unique about their work. But def their bridals are in the better price ranges compared to the other designers.

Zara Shahjehan, I liked one of her bridals alot last year. It was in ivory n golds with magents contrast on the lengha. I believe it was her best creations cuz she wore the same on her wedding too.

Lajwanti's work is bead and embellishment based, it wudnt hurt to chk them out either but i am not sure if they would have alot of stuff u had like. Last time i was there i did like a lengha which was in hot pink but it was the only piece that was better otherwise nothing striking at all.

HSY. He's also quite expensive and honestly from what i have heard from around his service isnt good either so i dont know. What i noticed was that one of their work would quote u 5lakhs and next time some other person wud say 3lakhs and that really ticks you off. I think he needs a manager there to properly handle his orders. I was never a hsy fan cuz his work is very traditional in terms of embrioderys. But last time i went there which was last dec i did like 1-2 pieces bt those were his most creatively challenging pieces and a normal bride cant wear them lol. They were tricky outfits to wear and not the normal lengha or bridal.

Khadija Shah, Elan. I would def recommend her stuff for the dialy party wear. A bride should have 5 of those atleast which she can wear when she goes out for lunch or something cuz now u cant wear totally done up clothes all the time.

I would add on more later................and get to rest of the questions in 5 mins :)

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

You can't really bargain much unless you have been a regular customer. If not, then just have a friendly convo wit the designer and tell them yr price range and give them an idea of what u want and request them to suggest u something accordingly. If you really like an outfit and say its bit pricey then you can tell them to lessen the work in order to cover the cost and they may or may not do it. But if ur lucky then he/she may agree and infact nt really lessen it much cuz at the end of the day its their name too going with the bridal and they wudnt take all the work off and not have it look bridal cuz it wl ruin their name too.

Other than that, no idea except what i said in my starting post...do try to get few other dresses made from them, few of yr own and few for cousins, etc and it wud def give u a good package price.

work with? more like dealt with :) the above ^ mentioned.

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

Maham thank u so much for those tips. they'll really come in handy. :)

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

That was a really great breakdown! Great work! :-) You look like you're super prepared for your own bridal, all you need is the groom! ;-) lol Acha, I just found Mehdi online and loved some of his bridals. Do you know what his price range is for a decent bridal? I liked one of his pieces and emailed him and waiting for a reply back. I will check on the other designers you mentioned also as you appear to have good taste!

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

thank u soooooo much for sharing:) Have u orded or seen hajra hayat's work? I have heard a lot of positiv things abt her:)

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

My pleasure :)

Lolz. that was funny :)

Yar, Mehdi is someone we have known for quite some years now so we have a rapport with him so i am not sure if i can tell you about his prices cuz what he tells us wl be different from the prices he give to new customers. So i believe a nice bridal by him wl be def 2+ but i am also sure it wl be worth it. Just make sure you are hands on with your order, if you ever happen to order from him as he can get lazy :).

Thanks for the compliments :)

Yes i have seen her work and i am not a fan i must say. She's alright, her prices are comparitively lower but so is her creation level i believe. So in the end it boils down to what you want and how much you are willing to spend.

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

Anyone else? Pls post your queries here and if i dont respond then inbox me.

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

Maham wht do u think abt the (platform designers lhr) couple of designers(new plus old ) were working for them i didnt knw the exact names, but they hav very reasonable rates too , if u hav any experience share it ? Sehr Murtaza se was kinda owner .

Re: Tips for Designer Bridal Wear

^ yar i have been to the platform that is next to OPM nt the one that recently opened. I liked an outfit from ego's there bt their service was nt good or maybe it was just my bad luck cuz the worker there told me the designer just got married so thats y its getting late to tell me if i cn place an order. Anyway, its nt bad bt again depends on wat u prefer. I didnt like the quality of fabric for most dresses. N they rnt really bridals either so yah :p
