Tipping?

Is it common for business to charge tip even though they did a really crappy job? I’ve heard of restaurants having a “gratuity tax” that they include in the bill but what abt businesses who will shortchange you, already taking a tip w/o your consent?

I went to this salon in Jackson Heights a few weeks ago. Normally I always tip them whenever I go because they do a good job but this time she did a ****ty half-assed job. And afterwards she had the nerve to say “we charge extra for tip.” I was stunned and she just nodded and said “yes, tip” and held her hand out.

I’m not planning on going back to them because of that, but i was just wondering, is it okay? is it common and accepted?

Re: Tipping?

Sara stop being kanjoos, and pass out some change.

Re: Tipping?

I ALWAYS tip when i go to restaurants, and at salons n stuff, i just shouldn’t be forced to tip if they did a ****ty job

Re: Tipping?

I don’t mind tipping but the restaurants shouldn’t charge without asking the customer. :naraz:

Re: Tipping?

Depending on how much the bill is they would include the tip in. For instance over 200-250 would have it attached. But a salon couldn't have been that high so that should've been the case.

Re: Tipping?

^ Well another time (same salon :bummer: ) she just shortchanged me, said the money she took, was her tip..freakin ***** took a $10 tip  :pcg:

Re: Tipping?

I dont know what its like in the States but here in London if im not happy with something i dont leave/give a tip-But thats kinda outrageous that the girl just held her hand out expecting one. Ive never experienced that here.

Re: Tipping?

Well....Welcome to States:)

Re: Tipping?

I don't mind giving the tip in the restaurants and I always give about 10% or sometimes 15% depending on the service but lately I've been noticing that sometimes, they calculate 20% and write it on the receipt. So that makes one feel a little obligated.

Re: Tipping?

Most restaurants in the US will add a 15% tip if you are a party of 6 or more. For smaller parties, generally tipping is left at the option of the customer. No idea about female saloons, but for guys' haircut, if the charge is $14, I'd usually leave $1 or $2 as gratuity, regardless of how happy or not I am with the service.

Re: Tipping?

Tell me about it...

Re: Tipping?

You look sooooooooooooooo cute in anger :mudhosh:

Re: Tipping?

But is it common for them to just take the tip when they'r counting out your change, or to ask for it?

Re: Tipping?

Sara…next time you go to some place…first change your money elsewhere…and then pay the exact amount charged… like $14.95 :k:

Re: Tipping?

6 yup...i wunt tip em if they do a crappy job...its nver happened to me

Re: Tipping?

It reminded me one incident…
I was in Subway with my colleagues and we were running out of time so we just took the sandwitch and when we went to pay the lady asked “add chips” I said “no chips” she asked thrice with a wiered look and I said no chips please pack my stuff and let me go. Later my colleague told me that she was asking “add tips” and I was so embarassed.I :bummer: couldn’t understand what she was asking. :smack:
Well usually these subway guys never ask for tips whenever we pay with credit card.

It was so embarassing for me.I usually give tips whenever I pay cash but never did while paying with credit card specially when it’s a To Go :frowning:

Re: Tipping?

^ That's werid, i've never encountered the tip thing when I was in subway..

Re: Tipping?

Me too … I didn’t even see anybody giving tips unless they got some changes back. That’s why couldn’t understand why she was forcing me to add “chips” :hehe:

Re: Tipping?

I'm sure she was asking to put in chips. Most ppl just take them with sandwiches (other than wierdoes, haha, j/k) and she wanted to find out which kind u wanted. Thats all. But its ok to feel bad once in a while anyway.
