Can someone come up with a timeline of events leading to this day? I hear it started months ago. How did it start, what transpired, has the two khateeb ever come out? I know the leader was caught escaping in a burqa.
So, who is the expert here? May be together we can put a timeline for all our GS members.

March 27 - Burqa-clad female students from the mosque`s Jamia Hafsa school abduct three women they accuse of running a brothel. The women are released after they "repent".
March 30 - Authorities shut down an illegal FM radio station set up by the students and hardline clerics to propagate their strict version of Islam.
*April 6 *- Aziz announces plans to set up vigilante Islamic courts and exhorts followers to become suicide bombers if their Taliban-style movement is forcibly suppressed.
*April 25 *- The leader of Pakistan`s ruling party declares all issues have been settled peacefully but a cleric denies any agreement was reached.
May 18 - Students seize four policemen and demand that authorities release 11 comrades being held in detention. The four policemen are later freed.
June 23 - Students kidnap nine people, including six Chinese women, and accuse them of running a brothel. They are released after about 17 hours.
*June 29 *- President Pervez Musharraf says suicide bombers from an al Qaeda-linked militant group are in Lal Masjid.
July 3 - Paramilitary forces fire teargas to disperse hundreds of stone-throwing students and gunshots are heard from inside the mosque`s compound.
July 4 - Abdul Aziz, chief cleric of Lal Mazjid caught while trying to flee in a burqa. Thousands of students surrender for Rs 5000 and safe passage each.
July 5 - Security forces fire a series of "warning blasts" before dawn. Musharraf rejects conditional surrender offer by the head cleric.
July 6 - Rockets fired from inside the mosque.

this hungama did not start until gov came out with its list of mosques either built illegally i.e. not to code or on illegal land. lal masjid had taken over land that did not belong to it. and thats when they developed concerns for dvds etc

Do you have date when govt 'found out' that the masjid was extended on illegally occupied land?

the process was started over 5 years ago, and the notices were sent to 50 such mosques just weeks before lal masjid folks started their ghunda gardee, dig up some old threads, dates are in there.

Time line goes far before this.. When the Ghazi brothers were caught with car load of guns - they were let off by this govt. - On Capitol Talk , Ijaz - ul - Haq admitted that le let of them few times under pressure.. If these goofs were not let of in te first insatance - present drama would not had unfolded - but it would not had suited the govt ..

well if we are talking history, ghazi was installed by zia andthen tolerated by every regime since then..had they not installed or tolerated, we would not have to deal with them today, I mean its not that they were acchay bacchay and turned bad after 9/11
but then as govts in the 90s were installing taleban, folks like these were empowered.

PTV aired a good presentation on the timeline yesterday, starting from the Children's Library takeover in Jan this year and ending at the beginning of the showdown this week.
