Time....

…bears away all…
it ages us. it strips away everything held important to us. Love, Lust, Beauty, Values, Ideas, glory days, magnificent civilizations, men and women cherished during their prime years…they will ALL be the victim of “Time” that does not stop for anyone.
Humans try to control time. we tried to keep tabs on it atleast with our watches/sundials and clocks…but fact is that time controls us. We are constantly trying to battle its control over us. Trying to eat the right foods, use the right potions and pills to extend the effect time has on our physical and mental. Paying dues to a higher by praying at the right appointed Time.
Religions take a smarter approach to it. Religion promises mankind that if life is lived according to certain principles, man will conquer “time”. The Soul is eternal, heaven is forever, man will be forever young and woman will be forever beautiful. There will be no depletion of resources and food in the afterlife. Religion stresses on anything and anyone that conquers “Time” as the “Truth”. God itself is forever and will remain forever.
What i dont understand…did religion evolve around this premise?
did God create a being that was sensitive to “time” and then promise it immortality if the being was obedient? why do such a thing?

Re: Time....

as soon as you became the mod of general, you are confused... or you became a mod cuz u were already confused :P?

Re: Time....

a) i was always confused about this
b) u are calling many others confused by stating the following "or you became a mod cuz u were already confused"
c) u did not answer my question

Re: Time…

can I also have a choice d) or e) please?

Allah:swt: created us not to be sensitive of time but dependent on time. Therefore, every other ayah in Quran is talking to us in terms of times… not because we are to become sensitive to it but so that we become more responsible… and then the very Quran take an oath on time giving it more importance.

*103.001 *I swear by the time,
*103.002 *Most surely man is in loss,
*103.003 *Except those who believe and do good, and enjoin on each other truth, and enjoin on each other patience.

Re: Time....

Time is the space between beginning and end. The end is death, which marks the transition to a timeless existence. I don't think religion revolves around time so much as we in the modern era are hypersensitive to time. We deal in seconds, whereas only a few hundred years ago we had no need to talk of anything other than days.

No matter the outcome of one's life, they are going to live on...so theologically there is no promise of immortality to only the obedient...hell is eternal too

Time is frequently described as a sign of, or attributed to, God. The occurrence of day or night...an eclipse...the fixed timings of prayer with respect to the motion of the sun...time figures heavily in worship, but I don't think worship is there to numb the sense of time...

“The son of Adam hurts Me by abusing Time, for I am Time; in My Hands are all things and I cause the revolution of night and day” (Bukhari 9:93 583).

Time, then, becomes more of a sacred trust rather than a carrot leading to the afterlife. Time is the only real universal currency, and something all of us can spend (in the way of worship), no matter our material standing.

Re: Time....

AQ: being dependant on time and being sensitive to it are the same thing no?

ofourse it does. by constantly reminding the people of the end of "time" and countdown to judgement day.

Do you think people would be religious if they were immortal? I dont think so....
OR do you think they would be as religious if they knew life after death was was not eternal? I dont think so...
thats why it seems like such a carrot stick approach.

Re: Time....

NO

Re: Time....

each day we are eagerly eating away days of our lives.. looking forward something new the next day.. life is like a sandglass.. it slips rapidly as it approaches its end.. some commit suicide in their teens.. some old ones pray for longer lives.. we r always complaining about shortage of time or how busy we r.. we have same no of hours in a day as Newton or Einstein had..

Re: Time…

How else to make it give obedience? If were immortal by default, and still had free will, then what would stop us from doing evil?

Re: Time....

whats the point of creating something to make it obey u? and then punish/reward it?

Re: Time....

You may as well ask what's the point of creating anything?

The way I handle it is that He done this because He can. You are making the assumption that He created us with the ability to understand His scheme, reasons, logic, etc. For all you know, we are created without the intellectual capabiity to see his larger plan.

Re: Time....

I understand, but there is no gaurantee that one's immortality would be a good thing...so i don't understand how that itself could be a carrot...

Do you think people would be religious if they were immortal? I dont think so....

I don't know...but time would certainly become irrelevant.

Re: Time…

Every human is immortal whether obedient or not…How one spends that eternity of immortality is what matters…Time is essence of immortality because we have been given a short span in which to utilize that time…The condition of your immortality depends upon how you utilized that time to your advantage…
