I think Ali has some very valid points. Those who argue in favour of operation, have probably underestimated the enemy and overestimated Pakistan’s military might to fight off a guerrilla war. All an operation could do is to get a certain area vacated. But this would open a new Pandora’s box. Taliban have a very well-organized setup in Punjab and Karachi and could easily create further havens in Balochistan. Afghanistan on the other hand provides another option for setting up bases for operational purposes. It will convert the whole country into a extensive war theater which will be beyond our capability to manage.
If the path of talks lead up a blind alley, the only viable option would be target-killing of top leadership of the enemy, without picking good Taliban and dumping bad Taliban. Israel successfully managed to wipe out the top leadership of Hamas through target-killing and crippled the organization in Palestinian territory.
