Time TO Get Rid of "Government Jobs"?

“Government jobs” qouta have been a major bone of contention between provinces as well as major area throught which political parties “bribe” people.

The government servants get lot more perks compared to those in private sector, like benevolent fund, health care, plots in housing schemes etc.

Why do the taxes have to spent on few government servants than the poor of the country while government departments are run so poorly.

Why shoudn’t we privatise all non-essential sectors like Post, Railway, PIA, Telephone etc. Even the education sector should be privatised, then government can subsidise them.

Re: Time TO Get Rid of "Government Jobs"?

There will always be government jobs as long as a government exists. It was even worse ealiar when almost every thing in Pakistan was under government control and administration because of nationalization of early 70s. With the return of private enterprise, especially in the 2000s, the issue of government job quota is not as important an issue as it used to be. That is why it is not an issue raised in Urban Sindh politics any more. I seem to remember a study that stated that the number of applicants for federal government jobs from urban Sindh has reduced significantly reflecting that many people from urban Sindh don't even bother try for federal bureaucracy jobs any more.

Reducing government bureaucracy and military enterprises will help make it even less of a political issue. The easist way to accomplish that will be to reduce the commercial enterprises of Pakistan army. It will be difficult though as it will directly hurt the pockets of army generals and officers and they will not let this happen.

Re: Time TO Get Rid of "Government Jobs"?

This should be the way to move forward for Pakistan.

I was once having a discussion with education minister of Punjab five or six years ago. We started making some calculations. At that time the eduction budget of Punjab was 30 billion rupees. It was the highest spending ministry at that time in Pakistan on both federal/provincial level. I am sure today the budget is much higher.. and substantial further grants can also be obtained from international donors if the ministry adopts some viable strategy and wastage is plugged.. same goes for other provinces also..

The cost per child per month at that time what the government was spending was coming to something around 300/400 rupees. I suggested him that why don't you let private people make the schools and just pay the fee.. in this case all the resources will actually be spent on educating children instead of financing the infra structure. Also the government does not have sufficient management skills to control such a huge work force.. at present there are about 700,000 employees working for Punjab education department. In my opinion they need a major shift in mentality. However the political governments do not have the will to adopt this logical strategy as they have control over employment which is used as a political tool to bribe incompetent people.

Same is true for all the other sectors like you have mentioned. If government wants to subsidize some social sectors they should just pay cash and let private enterprise actually run and manage the institutions.

The job of the government should be to regulate and not manage or build the institutions.. lesser the function of the government is, lesser will be the wastage.. but again you need a very strong and determined government and public support to do all these things.. it's easier said than done.. it's is not an easy task to take a stand against unions/employees to actually work in this direction. Apart from getting unnatural hefty perks they are used to under performance/inefficiency without anyone checking them.. and they resist any initiative in this direction..!!!
