With technological advancement, the science of astronomy has advanced leaps and bounds. We can now measure --with pin-point accuracy, and to the nearest seconds-- the variable speed, elliptical path traversed, rotaional speed and time period of the moon. So accurate are these measurements that we--without even looking at the moon thru a telescope-- can compute the position and timing of the new moon.
What is a new moon?
New moon = the moon after it has executed one complete revolution around earth. The time period varies (29 days and som hours) depending on proximity to the Sun (sun's gravitation pull does have an effect on the moon's time period)
There are three schools of thought.
1) These people claim the occurence of the new moon marks the beginning of the month, regardless of whether or not the moon can be "sighted." Sometimes the new moon cannot be seen even with a telescope. For instance,
Sun -------Earth-----Moon,
If the new moon occurs with the Earth in the center, then it cannot be seen, since it is hidden from the Sun with the earth casting a shadow on it; and the moon borrows light from the sun for its brightness. But the first group of people will resort to scientific calculation and claim that the new moon has occurred.
2) Second groups of people also rely on the scientifc data; but unlike the first group of people, they rely on scientific data to figure out when and where the moon will be "sighted." They study angles, elevation, longitude to ascertain the visibility of the moon.
Statement like this is common: "The new moon, which is 12 hrs old, will be visible in noth america and south america at 11:00 GMT."
3) Third group of people are more penchant towards the original sunnah of our beloved Prophet (SAW). The moon may be sighted in NJ -- but not in NY due to some cloud formation-- but this third group will not consider the sighting by the NJ people to be valid.
I usually go with the second group, because to be in the third group, you need to be pro-active and not lazy, which i am :(

The controversy of moon sighting is inline with plight of moslems now.
Prophet Muhammad used camel for transportation, I never followed his sunnah and rode camel, instead i ride bikes and cars made by infidels. I know I am a sinner 
I believe all the posters in this thread have abandoned prophet’s sunnah (along with many other sunnahs ), please correct me if i am wrong. If i am right then please explain the reasons

In those days prayer timings were determined by physically witnessing sun movement, now this practice is abandoned, almost all masjid’s have this chart for timing for all prayers all year round and no one bothers seeing sunset or sunrise. It is all pre-determined.

Few centuries ago it was considered blasphamy to translate holy quran in any other language, Now it is translated in all major languages and the whole world use them.
Authentic lunar callender is the need of the hour, you may say anthing today, tomorow your children might remember their childhood
3 When we were kids, there used to be so much dispute over moon sighting among muslim, even in Uk alone, people used to celebrate eids on 3 different days becuase they had no unity. Idiots, they even had moonsighting.com in those days, still they used to quarrel on these tiny issues …

First of all we need to get this thing out of our mind that celerating EID or any other day TOGETHER means unity. We CAN celebrate EID different day and still be muslims and united.
These days cities are percieved closer due to fast vahicles/transport. Older days same distance was enough to celebrate EID different day.
2- New moon is DARK and impossible to be seen by any means. This is explained earlier. First day moon is the DAY AFTER NEW MOON. Some people go by TV announcement of new “moon” and think its Islamic first day of the month. Not correct.
3- Science can be used to find out if it is at all possible to be able to see moon.
If not possible then there should not be arguments.
…BTW never heard of Blasphemy definition related to translation of Quran.
