One of the biggest issue in Pakistan's governance is the tussle between Prime Minister and President. Both of them treat the other as a "sokan" (the other wife). Our constitution has become a football between the two posts.
So it is time to abolish one of the posts and I suggest PM's post should be deleted. Anyone (including President Musharraf) who wants to hold the top post of the president should register with one of the parties and seek vote from the general public.
And before he goes to general public, he should be part of primary elections within his own party against other candidates.
No more leg pulling, or drawing room vote baazi. We are sick and tired of the bad blood.
Just elect the president for 5 years and get on with business of building the nation.
Our const. is meant for the PM to be the powerful person (parliamentary, not presidential), but the military keeps effing up the system, and then all it takes is one guy to dismiss the entire parliament when he goes on a power trip. Basically, there should be no musharraf as president (or PM), just a titular head like the const. says so, just like how India is doing it.

Trouble with Pak is not our system is bad. Parliamentary democracies have been more stable than Presidential democracies since WWII. Our problem is that no one wants to play by the book..gah..we keep amending the book itself.

Guys, maybe an arrogant prick with the right ideas is probably what we need in Pakistan anyways. Someone who can stand eye to eye with the American juggernaut and tell them that they have faltered. Someone who can with confidence and good measure take on the task of securing the border and having good faith of the elders of the waziris and such. He's got our vote of confidence. He can be trusted for fairness in elections, election commission and doing on the right thing. His background is all inclusive. He's a uniter. And he embodies the spirit of Pakistan in him. He is what Jinnah would want the country to lead.
Let's just join PTI and convince who ever we can to do so as well. The Irnoy of democracy is that elites always rule the people, but they derive their power by virtue of afinties they make in a society.
He's a good man, a true man. He's brave and patriotic. With a dashing charismatic personality.
Let's give this upstart his break: our vote of confidence. Especially since he boycotted these election on principle and never wavered.
Yeah, agreed! PTI deserves support... I think most students and young professionals already support him.
Its unfortunate that he isnt running, we need more brave, patriotic and sincere people within the govt.

The problem is that we like any nation are burdened with our own history, and our own stigmas, and our own shortcomings.
Think about Pakistan as a boat carrying 160~165 million people.
In that scenario, Pakistanis want their boat captain(s) to control the boat through troubled waters with minimum instability.
Problem with "give poltikos a chance to evolve" is that boat starts going like a roller coaster as soon as a politiko gets the charge.
We had big-mouth ZAB, to BB, to NS who even after getting more than one chances took the boat on a horribly unstable ride.
Democracy my friend evolves from tolerance! That is ruling party is tolerant of the opposition, and the opposition is tolerant of the ruling party.
And all these parties are tolerant of non-political entities such as bureaucracy and military.
In our case, the fundamental seed of democracy that is "tolerance" is badly missing and that is why democracy will not evolve no matter how long you wait.
Remember you can't organize a box of different colored balls by simply shaking it. The same way you can just establish a working democratic system by praying for it.

I dont share your belief... Pakistan system will evolve if institutions such as the supreme court are allowed to function independantly, if the army doesnt intefere in the workings of the govt, and the civilian govt is given financial and moral support from the rest of the world including and especially America.
Either way, democracy is the only way... Military dictatoship will destroy the country.

There is no other choice... Military dictatorship and one man rule will never allow the boat to continue... The ride might not be smooth under democracy, but atleast the boat wont turn over.
One of the reasons ofcourse that democracy has been so rough in Pak is BECAUSE it isnt allowed to evolve.. So each time a democratic civilian govt comes in, it is made to start from scratch and everything is stacked against it...
The military and the inteligence groups are constantly meddling with the workings of the govt, which adds to the instability...
Either way, point in the end is that Pak can only survive under a democracy... Military dictatorhsip will never work, it never brings stability... Once

Nice in theory, useless in practice.
Parliament checks the Prime Minister in a parliamentary democracy. Why can't we have the same in Pakistan? The 58-2b is an invention of a military mind, invented to subjugate the will of the people.
Isn't it ironic that an elected PM can't fire a COAS while the same COAS/President in turn has the power to fire the PM and all the reps elected by the people, no matter how evil they maybe?
