Could the mods could make this into a poll? How many of the members now feel that the time is right for a return to democracy? This time a meaningful one. Personally the deportation of Shabaz Sharif despite his return being given clearance by the courts is the last straw for me. If India can survive a hindu fundamentalist govt maybe it’s time for Pakistan to see democracy through to the bitter end instead of hi-jacking it before the term is up every few years.

Pakistan is at the threshold of democracy, we just need to find our feet...
Were getting there..
IMO, the time has come for a sustained democracy to take roots in Pakistan, specially since NSC is in place to safeguard national and strategic interests...

Good Joke. :biggthumb

With all these dramas, such as the referundum, and worst of all claiming its constitutionally legal, there is no room for democracy.

Enforcer,
Answer to Tindu's corruption is not a dictator.Answer is to pick the new guy. and if this new guy fails look for another guy.
IN short, democracy needs time to mature. Initial phase of democracy will always be painful but in long run it will work. That painful period needs sacrifice.
By the way If Tindu was corrupt then the dictator is not saint either. In that case why not have a guy whom you can always show the door whenever you want than have a guy who will stay there forever.Your life will anyway be miserable.
When you aren't answerable to your own people there's always a chance you are answerable to somebody else's.
I like Musharraf but a judiciary that can't adjudicate is kinda reduntant.

hey...I didnt expect Pakistani democracy to become like USA but least they could do is to be like India or anyother 3rd world democracy as suggested by xtreme in very first post.
Talking for 250 years,I dont think others will have to go through same learning curve.

Are you sure about that? come, come now. India and Pakistan are two totally geo-political enviroments. For they are based on so called "secularisim" while we are an Islamic Republic whichi must say not only turns some brows but also gives us a masive disadvantage when it comes to negotiations, why do you think turkey is changing from Islamic Republic to Republic of Turkey? Easier to join the EU and not forgetting NATO.
Only true representative democracy can work in a country like Pakistan which is composed of autonomous states as per 1940 resolution.
but how do u propose to bring about democracy??
It can't happen until the army takes a back seat which of course it won't do voluntarily. At the moment Musharraf is rightly a popular figure, but when the public of any country can't decide their own fate, sooner or later disillusionment will set in.

Hello?
Have you been reading the news "Pakistan" lately, its ful of people bitching and moaning about the Politicial situation in Pakistan.
Frankly Mushy is the one good thing to happen to Pakistan, and when he leaves the seat it is my belife and that of millions of other Pakistani's that a sane, rational and just man/woman will take his place and be the guiding beacon to help steer us through this quagmire of political instability.

The only purpose of the NSC was to safeguard the interests of the army. NSC would function under the president and not the elected Prime minister. Musharraf is already holding the offices of both the country's president and the COA. Although NSC should be comprised of 13 members, it has only 11 members at the moment because Musharraf is already holding the above mentioned offices, and a leader of the opposition has not yet been designated. The Senate has passed this controversial bill in just three minutes and the members of oppostion were also not present. Happens only in Pakistan.

Yes Mushy is the bees knees but who is the army accountable to if not the people of Pakistan? If they get rotten leaders at least they can't blame anybody except themselves if they have a chance to vote.

Well yes, thats true..
democracy is needed,a nd at the samew time a system of checks and balances to prevent wholesale loot khasoot by the ministers and MNAs MPAs etc..
would a system of checks and balances eliminate corruption, no..it has not eliminated corruption anywhere else in the world, but atleast it decreases it, the khullum khulla dhandli and badmaashi is kept in check.
and lastly, any politicians involved in destablization of the ruling govt through supporting activities that mess up law and order situation should be dealt with.
with a proper independent system of checks and balances with high integrity, we need a clause that people in public office convicted of corruption are banned for life from seeking a public office or assuming a leadership position in any political party.
