Timatar ya dahi?

My SIL keeps saying that it’s the same whether you put tomatoes or you put yogurt in a salan…The function and taste is the same…

I don’t agree…I know if I put yogurt in my karhai gosht, there’s no way it’s gonna come out tasting the way it is…

My preferred way is, to put tomatoes in every dish…I just love them…

So, I put them in dishes where there isn’t even a need for tomatoes…Even if there is dahi I still put in tomatoes…

So…Is my SIL right? That Timatars and dahi serve the same purpose? That is to give ‘weight’ to the salan?

Re: Timatar ya dahi?

your SIL is correct but i personally put a bit of both in the curry. it just adds more flavor to it

Re: Timatar ya dahi?

The function is the same but the taste isnt..........dahi adds more khatta pan as compared to tomatoes. I like putting dahi in my biryani becuz it adds more flavor. But with salans etc, (except korma), tomatoes serve the purpose fine.

Re: Timatar ya dahi?

Timatars for sure. They help make the lush masaala, which probably wont be possible with the yoghurt.

Re: Timatar ya dahi?

Your SIL is right, but tomatoes are tastier. My Mom puts both yoghurt and tomatoes in her salaan.

Re: Timatar ya dahi?

If dahi is khata then they serve the same purpose, if not then dahi kinds of make you karahi sweet. I like the combination of tomatoes and youghurt.

Re: Timatar ya dahi?

Lajo, the two are different in the color as well, so just keep that in mind when switching between the two.

Re: Timatar ya dahi?

a mlil timatar n a lil dahi.. works!!!!!!!!

Re: Timatar ya dahi?

Thanks guys...

That was quite informative for my culinary knowldge...

I am pretty good cook, but darned if I know what the purpose of every Masala is...

Re: Timatar ya dahi?

tomatoes also makes a dish look more vibrant in color.

Re: Timatar ya dahi?

yes with timataers you can make nice masalla and thick curry I think which is not possible with dahi .
