I am not a big fan of seafood but for some weird reasons I was craving fish so we got some tilapia fillets.. we marinated it overnight to get rid of the “fishy” smell but once pan fried, it tasted very “muddy” to me.. did this ever happen to you before? how do you get rid of that muddy flavor? my first reaction was that it tastes like basement… why is that!!!
FYI.. it’s farm raised frozen fillets!
Also, any suggestions for mild flavor fish that can be pan fried with light seasoning???
I am not sure what exactly a muddy taste will be.I have always found tilapia to have the least fishy smell.Flounder also is a mild flavor fish but very delicate,I hardly use it.
If I were to suggest a mild flavor fish,I'd say tilapia.I have made it with different marinades and in different ways.It always holds itself and tastes well.
i bought fresh tilapia on sat and marinated it for literally 10 mins and pan-fried.. i did not taste or smell any fishyness though... as chips said.. very delicate and mild flavoured..
Yupp tilapia barely has any smell, it is very flaky, and has a very smooth flavor. Also you don't have to marinate it over night, i normally marinate it just before cooking, it cooks pretty fast too. Also eat it right off the stove as it tastes and smells best when eaten right away. :)
GtG...I get it from S&Shop and it is the same way as you explained 'previously frozen' and it seems to taste fine to me.
I have fried it,baked it and made a salan out of it.
I fry it using the typical desi spices and then coating in besan ...you know whenever I crave the Lahore ki fried fish....
At other times just marinate with salt n pepper and garlic and lemon juice and pan fry.Might use bread crumbs to give a coating if you like.
Minimal spices and stuff make a more yummy fish IMO.
I don't even like fish....but my dad has cooked tilapia several times and it doesn't have a strong smell. I've even tasted it...and I found the taste to be stronger than that of chicken....(still not crazy about fish)....but it still wasn't overwhelmingly strong. Now, some might argue that salmon is mild.......but I think salmon has a more fishy smell.
after boiling rice, i fry it with spinach and red bell pepper ... add some masala ... put fish in a baking dish and cover with rice ... top with lemon rings ... bake about 15 mins ...
