So a question for you ladies. My MIL buys clothes for my toddlers that are waaaay too big. When they were preemies and only weighed 4 pounds, she was buying 12 and 18 month outfits and insisting they wear them. Now that they are almost 2 and wearing clothes around 2T, she is buying 5s. I would just put them away until they fit but she wants to dress them right away and they end up tripping over the pants that fall down to their ankles. She insists that they need big clothes to allow them to grow and that clothes that fit will restrict their height/weight. I have never heard of this. They are also (thank God) at the 99 percentile for height and weight, so their clothes are not slowing them down. It’s becoming a serious issue.
Has anyone heard of this? Dealt with it? I put my foot down and changed them back after a bad fall and she was very angry. Help!!
Thanks! After I typed this, I realized how crazy it sounds that I am going along with this. I am not desi- so when she tells me something is cultural I want to be sensitive.
there is more danger in toddlers get seriously hurt by tripping. that’s a ridiculous thinking. kids’ growth is not subject to what size of clothes they wear…their growth could be stunted if they wear clothes made of solid steel and never take them off for many many years like the Chinese women used to have small/stunted feet.
No, this is not cultural at all, never heard of this. She’s ridiculous. Kudos to you for trying to appease her though when you are not even a desi used to controlling MILS.
