Tight Clothes Restricting Growth

So a question for you ladies. My MIL buys clothes for my toddlers that are waaaay too big. When they were preemies and only weighed 4 pounds, she was buying 12 and 18 month outfits and insisting they wear them. Now that they are almost 2 and wearing clothes around 2T, she is buying 5s. I would just put them away until they fit but she wants to dress them right away and they end up tripping over the pants that fall down to their ankles. She insists that they need big clothes to allow them to grow and that clothes that fit will restrict their height/weight. I have never heard of this. They are also (thank God) at the 99 percentile for height and weight, so their clothes are not slowing them down. It’s becoming a serious issue.

Has anyone heard of this? Dealt with it? I put my foot down and changed them back after a bad fall and she was very angry. Help!!

Re: Tight Clothes Restricting Growth

I’m sorry but that’s absolutely ridiculous lol! You are their mom, you decide what they wear.

Re: Tight Clothes Restricting Growth

Thanks! After I typed this, I realized how crazy it sounds that I am going along with this. I am not desi- so when she tells me something is cultural I want to be sensitive.

Re: Tight Clothes Restricting Growth

It is not cultural… Lol

Re: Tight Clothes Restricting Growth

oh no…not another myth.

there is more danger in toddlers get seriously hurt by tripping. that’s a ridiculous thinking. kids’ growth is not subject to what size of clothes they wear…their growth could be stunted if they wear clothes made of solid steel and never take them off for many many years like the Chinese women used to have small/stunted feet.

Re: Tight Clothes Restricting Growth

Saying something is cultural is her go to phrase when she disagrees. Hope I didn’t offend anyone

Re: Tight Clothes Restricting Growth

No, this is not cultural at all, never heard of this. She’s ridiculous. Kudos to you for trying to appease her though when you are not even a desi used to controlling MILS.

What is brownrice’s take on this matter?

Re: Tight Clothes Restricting Growth

If that was the case, all people would have to do is wear tight clothes…eventually we’d all be small and skinny :cb:

Re: Tight Clothes Restricting Growth

Brown rice just gets frustrated and says this nonsense is why he married a gori :(.

Re: Tight Clothes Restricting Growth

‘brown rice’ is good for ‘rasaawal’ [sweet rice, desi ishTyle] while ‘white rice’ is good for ‘Khuskaa’.

Re: Tight Clothes Restricting Growth

Lol your MIL is bonkers. Go ahead and dress your kids as you want, mama.

Re: Tight Clothes Restricting Growth

You have to ask yourself one question, who is more important to you, your child or your mother in law?
