So I’ve been trying to do some research on thyroid. Due to my niece have the symptoms its been worrying my family alot. shes only 5 and the doctors said she might have thyroid. Shes on medicines but her symptoms remain. She gets very lazy, even though my sister tried to get her involved in alot of running around activities and shes gaining weight very fast. When she was born she had anemia. I have not had anyone around with thyroid so i am not familiar with this alot, ive been doing my google research though. I would appriciate it if ppl how have or ppl around them have experienced it. how bad can it get? what can be do to make it better? is it normal for a 5 year old girl to have it?

Re: Thyroid?
You mean she might be suffering from hypothyroidism. We all have thyroid gland but in some indiviuals it may not work properly. You need to get her examed from a good endocrinologist to have a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
Re: Thyroid?
Your niece should have a blood test in order to confirm that she has thyroid problem. She is only 5 years old - and maybe have iron deficiency which causes tiredness. I would not say a child is lazy - she is just not well enough to be active. She must be treated properly
Re: Thyroid?
she cant hv thyroid. it's hypo or hyper. she could also have hashi's (similar to hypo.) that's it's an autoimmunie disease. and for the most part a pill a day takes care of it..u just have to take control and stay on top of it because the dosage , i think, can fluctuate.
Re: Thyroid?
philisophy pretty much covered it
If she is put on a pill, then that will be that. They will continue to check her blood every 3 to 6 months to make sure her levels are OK and over time symptoms should disappear. Honestly it is nothing to be too worried about, many people have thyroid problems. The hardest part is taking the pill, which depends on her diagnosis but most likely if she is put on a pill she will have to take it for the rest of her life.
Re: Thyroid?
thanks for the informative replies guys!!! greatly appriciate it! :) but i was reading that it could also become cancer. but she is on meds for thyroid but docs said they will see if it effects her properly within 3-4 months if not then it might get a lil serious. Not sure have not heard from my sis about the updates but its worrying. i guess u cnt see ur babies go through a single bit pain :(
but Inshallah she wil be fine in no time!!!
Re: Thyroid?
A thyroid condition cannot turn into cancer..i think what you mean is that there is probably a correlation between thyroid conditions and some type of cancer...it could just be one study. for the most part, people lead normal lives....it is very common, i guess like PCOS?
now, if it's not a thyroid condition and theyre just gonna test the meds on her for 3-4 months, then it could lead to complications...so make sure that it is what they say it is. a lot of times you need an endocrinologist..and people aren't just satisfied with the blood test alone. btw, does someone in her family have it too?
and get the opinions of a doctor who knows her and her history, etc..
