Thyroid and diet ?

Doc told my sister that she might have hypothyrodism, and she has 3 months before the next blood test. Are there some aliments that prevent having hypothyrodism or you have to follow a special diet ?

It kind of scares me because I’m affected by this since I was 13-14 but never bothered about what to avoid and what not, just been taking my l-thyroxine and that’s it.
It makes me lazy, I am a bit yo-yo with weight (I can look puffy one day and the next day unswollen), extreme fatigue sometimes, not-very-concentrated..
severe acne eventhough I dunno if it’s related to that or not.

Re: Thyroid and diet ?

Once you're on the Eltroxin/Euthyrox tablets, mostly it goes well. They say its only when you're over/under treated that you usually have symptoms. I myself was diagnosed with it some years ago. I'm currently (still) in the process of having it fully regulated, It takes a lot of time, IMO.

I had a period of time where my skin kept breaking out. B-vitamins helped that (Panthothenate, vit B5). Other things to avoid is refined sugar, corn, soya, too much salt. I'm sure you will be able to find more about this with google.

All I can suggest is, have regular bloodtests, be regular with you medicine (take it at the same time) and excersize a little everyday.

Re: Thyroid and diet ?

Carbs are the enemy! especially bread, pasta, potatoes. I felt like utter rubbish even when taking thyroxine, woke up every morning looking like a swollen fish. As soon as I cut out carbs I felt like a new person, joint pains gone, skin amazing, no more puffy eyes.

Re: Thyroid and diet ?

^I think thats very true

Re: Thyroid and diet ?

Thanks a lot :)

I did notice when I was on a gluten free diet, I was very active, and no more swollen.

Re: Thyroid and diet ?

thanx for posting this thread, by reading thru it i think thats the case with me too...iv had hypothyroid since i was born, iv been taking levothyroxine 125mcg but have found it hard to keep it managed over the years..im also very anemic & lack in vit d...iv been feeling extremely exhausted the past few months/weeks and puffed up at times even tho im under 6stone....plus now i have to go on a gluten-free diet which im finding very very difficult, the flour/pasta etc tastes sickening i cant even swallow it, so how can i cut out the carbs and what do i replace it with?

Re: Thyroid and diet ?

6 stones = 38 kgs right :o ?
Same case here, l-thyroxine 125, vitamin d deficiency , I had iron defiency too but I don't have it now Alhamdulillah. Beefsteak + spinach and potatoes puree at least thrice a week, lots of lentils and over a period of 6 months it was gone. Try it :)

I think you're exhausted because of your anemia, have you talked to a doctor about the kind of diet you should follow ?

Re: Thyroid and diet ?

yeah im 38kg and 28yrs old, doctor has prescribed me 'ferrous gluconate & vit d' tablets but they arent working, i still feel really really tired..doctors say i should check out multi-vitamins from holland n barratts to see if i can find a better brand to see if it works and i should have plenty of fresh fruit/veg and include more raw spinach in my diet etc, its been really hard plus i have to follow gluten-free diet, just thinking about it makes my appetite disappear.. :/ i find our desi food is more filling for me, roti with curry etc but i need to switch the wheat flour to gluten-free flour which i have been prescribed from the juvela range by my doctor but im finding it difficult to adjust, as the new gluten-free flour is taste-less plus i have to add xantham gum to bind it when making the dough and its such a hassle to make the perfect chappati, but i tried a few times but its tastes yuck i cant even swallow it, dunno what to do..as trying new things really stresses me out.

Re: Thyroid and diet ?

Avoid soy at all costs. Though I think it leads to hyperthyroidism.

Re: Thyroid and diet ?

^ Yep. I got hypothyroidism early because I loved drinking soy milk for years (I had no idea of the relation). I was going to get it no matter what because my mom has it....but unlike my mother who got it in her 40's....I got it in my 20's.

Re: Thyroid and diet ?

I have hupothyroidism and ake my meds daily in the morning before breakfast. Alhamdulilah whenever i have got the blood tests done, the reports are always good. As long as she s taking the meds, i dont think there should be a problem.

Re: Thyroid and diet ?

i think too soy is the culprit for my hypothyroidism.

But like AngelEyes said, if you're well regulated. It means nothing.
