Thumbnails

Hello,

We are planning a revamp in the image upload system. We have a choice of enabling the thumbnail system. Instead of showing the whole picture, we can show just a reasonable size thumbnail. It will serve three purposes:

  1. Reduce the page download time.
  2. Consistent look of the page (images wont bleed out the frame)
  3. Reduce the bandwidth load on our servers.

My question to you all is, are you willing to sacrifice the quick views for the above mentioned benefits?

As for the poll, I would also like to add that since most of the people here are Pakistanis abroad, and have DSLs/Cable, it shouldnt be a problem viewing the full pictures... However, I also accessed this site from dialups in Pakistan at one time, and those image laden threads were a nuisance, so maybe we can have some sort of option in the profile where a guppie can choose if he wants to view the forum with thumbnails enabled, or disabled, as he pleases... This way he can end up choosing whatever he likes, and both of the parties will be satisfied :)

user enabling/disabling of thumbnails is not an option right now.

I mean... are you saying that all images will be in a thumbnail size and will automatically be compresed when uploading?? OR ..... it will be just an option..... Like click if you want this to appear in teh thumbnail size??

Thumbnail is no good for some notebooks, don't you think??

the images in the posts will be shown in a fair size thumbnail. Not one of those microscopic sizes. then, if you want to look at the full size, just click on it and the original image will be shown in a new pop up window.

Wada Saien :k: this is definitely a good idea. Will save GS bandwidth and it will be fair to those dialup users who can select what image they want to see in full view in another window, and it wont be foreced upon them to see the full blown images on the thread. We have many guppies here from Pakistan who are still on 56k and they would love it. Not everyone here is on DSL/Cable/T1/OC3 etc.

Yeah, that's a cool thing to do, I've seen all the images people post here... why not do that, it would save tons of bandwidth (and money!). Also keep reminding people of hot linking instead of uploading stuff to gs servers.

In case of thumbnail we will click on the nail and image would open in a seperate window? :(
