So baby is 2 months 2 weeks old. In general she is doing mashaAllah really good. But its that darn infection that doesn’t wanna clear away. She got it at 5 weeks. Then I got it from her. Besides the formula she has been getting expressed milk since then. I kinda miss BFing her. We both were prescribed Nystatin & told to sterilize everything that comes in contact with milk & her mouth. Thats her bottles, nipples, pumping parts, storage bottles & her pacifier. Boil it every day for 20 minutes.
We have been doing that since a month now. Mine’s has cleared away but she still has it. In fact it has spread from her tongue to her cheeks now.
I asked her doctor on her 2 month appointment & she just told me to keep applying Nystatin. Its NOT working.
Any suggestions people? I read online about applying yogurt on the infection & that it helps. Also read about Baby Dophilus. Haven’t used either one of these things so far. Before making a call to the nurse I wanna know if there is anything else that can be done.
Oh & in the start I did slack a bit when it came to applying Nystatin on her & boiling the parts. But that was just a 3 day thing.
awww...i hope your daughter gets well realllly soon. i don't know of any home totkas and honestly i would advise you to not try anyyything at all you read online or hear without consulting a doctor or nurse first. i mean, its a lil baby you don't wanna take any risks from unqualified people.
can't the doc prescribe something different if you're convinced this isn't working? don't wait for the next appt just call him up and ask for a better/stronger medicine or something.
Pkgrl The thing is her doctor saw it & said its just fine. Its not too much. Come to think of it at that time it wasn't much either but still. She is not irritated by it either. Like she drinks her milk & all has no problems sucking but then its the whole boiling & kinda keeping her away from me that I am not liking & TBH I find it kinda creepy too.
I am gonna wait till tomorrow & maybe make the call then.
poor baby, I would callthe doctor right away and go for a check up. At home I would make sure everythign is properly sterlized, and make sure you dry everything properly before storing it. Also change the sheet everyday, it is too much and tiring, but worth it.
My son had a little infection around the eye, which is suppose to be common. It cleared up within few days of proper care.
Alos be patient, these things sometimes take time. I hope you have some help on hand.
Haha! The only help I have is my hubby who obviously has other things to do as well. He sometimes does boil the stuff for me but there is only enough times I can ask him to do so many things.
By changing the sheets you mean her crib sheets? Does that mean change her blankets & clothes everyday as well? If this is whats gonna help me get rid of it I don't mind doing it.
I have also heard that rinsing the bottles, pacifiers, etc. and everything else that comes into contact with the baby's mouth should be washed with a solution of equal parts water and vinegar, thats the best way to sterilize them and easier than boiling too.
So sorry to hear, I know how hard it is to see your baby uncomfortable. Ours had thrush within the first 3-5 months and we just rubbed a prescription antibiotic on her tongue twice a day for a week and it went away. I don't know what to offer but I pray that it gets better soon :(
My daughter has the same problem. She is 2 months old too and has had it since she was a week old. I got it from her but didn't stop BF-ing her. She used to take the bottle before every once in a while (pumped milk) and she has stopped taking that too, and it might be related to her thrush. Let me know if you find any useful totka. Her doctor said if hers doesn't go away in 2 weeks then she will give her something other than Nystatin.
My son had it and I used Nilstat drops. The doctor told me to stop breast feeding till the infection cleared away but I used Nipple caps and fed him. The infection cleared away in a week.
She still has it. Nothing worked for us. But this is what I am doing now. No more bfing. Didn't have enough supply anyways. No more sterilizing everything every day.
Starz we gave her diflucan as well. Its also by prescription. Turns out many doctors know that Nystatin won't usually work on all babies but since diflucan is a little on the expensive side insurance companies require that the patient try Nystatin & THEN Diflucan.
We did however had this one week period where besides sterilizing & pumping we would apply nystatin 3 times a day but also rub a warm wet washcloth on her tongue & inside her cheeks to rub away the thrush. It seemed to help a little & since then I have given up. Doctor says she is not bothered by it & if the thrush works up again just do the washcloth thing with Nystatin.
^ daktarin oral gel, worked wonders on my son when he had it
You're right, Daktarin works... but here in UK its not licensed for use in children under 4 months of age or during first 5–6 months of life of an infant born pre-term....so maybe thats the reason the doctor hasnt precribed it :)
my dtr gave it to my 6 week old
as the nystatin drops werent working and im in the uk :D
Its not licensed means the manufacture doesnt recommend it to be used under that age group.....and its contra-indicated for those babies whose swallowing reflex is not properly developed yet.....however, some doctors can still decide to give it even if something is not licensed....however, its probably not a good idea to buy it over the counter without the doctor prescribing it :)
like i said, the doctor prescribed nystatin for my niece which didnt work....and me being a pharmacist I recommended Daktarin to her....but thats because she was much older than this posters child :)
as part of my job, i have to be cautious of what I recommend to who. Have to think of age, contra-indications etc first....and in this case the age of the baby seemed too young to me hence its better that the doctor prescribes something....rather than buying over the counter.
Don't know about Daktarin, but I do know that Dilfucan had some strong side affects. My baby's appetite went down the drain & her reflux got even worse.
Either way. I was just checking her mouth & MashaAllah its only halfway left on her tongue. Baby not bothered, mommy not bothered.
^Daktarin is very good.....if the problem still stays...its best to ask your doctor whether you can use Daktarin....it might be called a different brand name where you live.....so the active ingredient in it is: miconazole (an antifungal).....hope she gets well soon:)
Thanks LFP. She seems to be fine. She still has a little bit of the thrush but she is not bothered. I'll just ask her ped. on her 6 month visit if she still hasn't gotten rid of it by that time. Doctor says she doesn't see any need to give her any medicine & my daughter is drinking milk & all so I guess we are good for now.
