now that shias will probably dominate government in iraq, is it not possible for the newly formed government (if it does form any time soon) to unite or become an ally with dominant shia government of iran, and pose greater threat to US in future?
iraq is so ethnically/religiously divided, wudn’t it be difficult or impossible to form a democratic government?
with all the chaos and instability in iraq, ppl at the moment there are frustrated and are in need of some sort of leadership and if they are not able to form a government soon , wouldnt that opens door for some charismatic leader(s) to emerge which can possibly lead to another authoritarian government? ( like the emergence of hitler ( but less violent), he was elected democratically only because he was able to give germans what they wanted to hear all along).
just couple of questions i had in mind. i would reallllly appreciate it if u can keep the discussion/comments curse free. thanks.
hehe.. oh well, must be silly questions perhaps. i was talking to someone at the uni, and these questions just sprung up. i thought i'd ask guppies here what do they think about it since most of them know about politics n all and give them a break from US/PAKISTANI/MUSLIM/CHRISTIAN/ISRAEL/SHIA/JEWS bashing threads.
in order to foster a peaceful environment, the Shia dominated gov’t will make concerted efforts to include the kurds and sunnis. The ethnic/religious diversity will actually make for a stronger democratic gov’t as opposed to a weaker one.
Nope, it has the opposite effect and has self-corrective properties. They will all work together because it’s in their personal best interests to do so as well as the people/faction they represent. It just will take a little while initially to find the balance.
Stu, you are supposing/assuming too much. You dont think that Shias will be out to get revenge for their alleged(mistreatment) under Saddam? Of course they will, its human nature. This tit for tat will continue. In order to bring peace to Iraq, they must have a governemnt that includes sunnis. kurds and Shias. Anything else will be unsuccessful.
Take India as an example. You don’t got a much more diverse mix than that. Apart from odd incidents it has functioned very well as a secular democratic nation.
A Muslim President; Sikh PM - yet the majority of people in the country are Hindus.
This setup of ethnic partitioning was done by the british after WWI coz it suited their way of controlling thins i.e divide and conquer and still Turkey faces the problem with kurds on their borders.
and For ur question its in the interest of ppl of iraq to get a working govt. going but then who will benefit from that.? the capitalistic machinary? No .. so they won;t let that happen..
just keep providing more ammunition so that they keep ppl of iraq busy blowing each other apart..
I guess that would b one outcome of it.. i.e some charismatic leader (may b like they used to get elected as Badshaah in the Moghuls era.. :) kill all and u r left as champion )
Shias are not and will never be a threat to US interest......All this sabre-rattling between Iran/shias and US is just a facade.....just look at their cooperation during the Iran-Iraq war under the auspices of Iran-Contra.....Furthermore, Iran/shias offer a perfect counter balance to the sunni-arab world.......
