Thousands gather for Enke funeral

**Tens of thousands of fans and dozens of football stars have gathered in the German city of Hannover to pay their last respects to Robert Enke.**The German goalkeeper threw himself under a commuter train last week after battling with depression.

He had been due to play as part of the national team at next June’s Football World Cup in South Africa.

Thousands filed into the stadium to view his coffin, decorated with a wreath of white roses.

The national team’s coach, Joachim Loew, described his team mate as both “an exceptional sportsman and a wonderful human being”.

“People like Robert are like stars,” Mr Loew wrote in a tribute published in several national newspapers. “They shine brightly, even in the darkest night. They do not die but live in our hearts forever.”

Enke will be buried later during a private ceremony. His grave will be next to that of his two-year-old daughter who died from a heart infection.

Some 50,000 were expected to fill the stadium and two vast video screens have been erected to show the event for those who do not manage to get inside.
