The thesis of this article is - liberals (in this case white) may think they are not racist. Goes on to list 10 behaviors that show that while well intentioned, their defensiveness does show they don’t fully get it.
This article probably applies to ANY majority wrt an oppressed minority. Those in the majority who think they are in tune with the minority need to look inward to examine the validity of their assumption.
Speaking of which, how about folks doing some creative writing in general forum rather than in their blogs. Quite sure there are plenty here who can write such articles.
Very strong article. I agree with the writer that liberals most often do overpresent their case or we can say "oversell" it. But lets admit it, its not easy either to find the exact right balance and make yr case without overstressing. And when there is a campaign for something, there are chances that we may end up saying few things that should be eliminated or ignored at worst.
and left wing to the extreme often beat the drum so hard that it often gets caught in record. For example if liberals talk about women rights they often end up getting labelled as feminists (even guyz) while we all know the difference b/w equal rights believer and a feminist.
Also you have to keep in mind wut the opposite camp i.e. the left wingers are saying about it which is often full of hate, prejudice, anger and wut not. So comparing these two which one are you going to pick? This key choice is actually what decides our course of path in future.
Not sure the article is holding the liberals' feet to the fire due to overselling. It sate that in spite of being a liberal, one can have racism buried deep inside that surface is the following (writing from memory with my additions)
1) being defensive - " how could you say I am a racist. I marched with Dr. King". Bernie Sanders and his supporters exhibited this as reaction to BLM protest in seattle
2) Trivializing the injustice - "I have also experienced poor treatment - it is not just African Americans" in response to injustice against blacks
3) Reaching the limit of racial tolerance and shutting down - (my addition follows) Bernie Sanders walking out after 5 minutes of BLM protest. Rather than stand there and listen to them.
4). The other side is worse. When confronted by lack of actions re racial injustice the liberal who says why blame me. The other side is worse. Example - all the Democratic candidates

THE article does not charge liberals with racism. It simply brings up some a lid ooints. Liberals will do well to read it carefully to see any of the point apply to them. Else they are doing what the article says some do.
