I am SUCH a scatterbrain, i'm always losing stuff man....The worst thing i've probably lost is my passport 1 week before i was goin on holiday. I had to pay extra to get one made in emergency....
Well it sucks to lose something, especially if its hard earned cash. Once someone broke into our old house, and stole £6,000 cash from my dad's briefcase. It money that had just come out of a comittee my dad was part of and was gonna go to the bank of Monday. On the weekend it got nicked. That was bad, and no insurance covers things like that so it was a bummer...

You try to find the owner and after one year in case of Non perishable goods and suitable time in case of persihable goods sadqa them for the benefit of owner, or use it if you need it.
Thats what i think the right ruling is, atleast this is the ruling of Imam Bihari :)

Thats cool. Once we returned to Pakistan and my mother left her handbag in the van we rented to get home. It had a lot of her jewelry in it, pearls, gold etc with cash in dollars. Dad was trying to get in touch with the airport to see if they could trace the van. Early in the morning the van driver returned himself with the bag, everything in it. My parents thanked him a great deal and gave him i think $50.00 or something. That was very impressive and honest. My chachi was like…God you people always get lucky don;t you 
Once in I found around 20 pounds in my school ground and I went and turned it in tothe office. They sent a certificate of honesty and blabla to my home too. My mum however lost it during packing when we were leaving England

In Jan 06 when i was coming back from Pakistan i lost my handbag at Dubai airport which had my passport, ticket & some family photos. It was night time i was too much worry, i register my comlain and come back to home in mid night.
Next day morning i got a call from One person, he was from Pakistan
He called and asked about my identification after confirmation he says i found your passport out side Dubai airport and
"MAAF KARNA BHAI HUM NAY BHABI KI PHOTO DAIKEEN HAIN JO AAP K SAATH HAIN"
finally he came to me and handover it to me...
