this mendhi/henna design...

random but does anyone know how they did her mendhi with black and that orange like color? i’ve seen my sudanese and other african muslim friends rock black henna on eid but never saw a desi, then again who knows maybe her family is kenyan since they are ismaili and i know a lot of kenyan ismailis.

anyhow it’s pretty different looking i like it:

theres no such thing as black mehndi, its actually hair dye that they use! i had my hands done when I went to the Middle East. its beautiful but quite dangerous....you MUST take it off after about 15 minutes because they mix paint thinner (yes im not kidding) with the hair dye. It makes the color dark, but its very very dangerous for your skin. I know someone who had the mehndi design literally burned into her skin because she didnt know it was paint thinner and left it on too long.

Needless to say, I didnt know it was paint thinner either until after the fact. Luckily I followed their directions to take it off after 10-15 minutes. I guess you could try it without the paint thinner?

Re: this mendhi/henna design...

are u serious?!? i've seen pictures of this type of mehndi and thought it was soooo amazing! there has to be another method because my cousin's wife had hers done in a similar manner in pakistan last year for their wedding.

Re: this mendhi/henna design...

Yup, this type of mehndi is pretty common in Pakistani weddings nowadays.

I’m sure it has become common, but its still dangerous. You guys can check out these links, I googled it to make sure:

Henna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Henna Page - Warnings

If you’re in love with the idea, use it at your own risk  At least you’ll know the risks associated with it before you decide to go with black henna.

i hear that if you have dark skin the african type isn't harmful like it is on white ppl's skin. i have also researched black henna a long time ago and read about that but my african friends never mentioned paint thinner just said it was a type of dye with henna. so hmm... but gosh if yall have more pics of this kinda stuff please post. and i shall contact my friend and see if he can ask her what they used.

Re: this mendhi/henna design...

The black dye can cause very bad burn marks for some people especially if you have sensitive skin or suffer from eczema.
Some people will have no reaction at all.
Avoid it if you can buy if you are going to use it, I recommend a skin test, you don't want to have a skin reaction on your wedding as it can burn and itch quite badly.

I have heard that in india, they put something called henna oil on their hands before applying the mehendi ....

I think it might be a mix of eucalyptus oil and clove oil .. but i am not sure ... heard it helps the mehendi release the color on the skin ...

any one else heard anything about it ?

yes i was just at a gujurati wedding and they use eucalyptus oil on their hands before applying the mendhi

hey thanks for that.... can i ask , do they just apply it directly to their hands or do they mix some other stuff in it .. coz that oil can give minute burning sensation .... i wonder if they mix anything else in it ... do you know ?

Thanks

Re: this mendhi/henna design...

no they just use a cotton ball and apply it but not too generously, and i have to say it works. You know how they say if you're a bit more tanned the henna color is harder to take, well a lot of those girls were pretty tanned and got a good color and i figure it must be that stuff.

Re: this mendhi/henna design…

Well m so surprised about paint thinner, honestly i am not buying into it, mebbe dis whole kind of preparation is made in pakistan, but the place that iknow or instead where my frns etc used to go, idont think dey used that, cuz ppl iknow dey used to get it so frequently, dat even the shopowner recognized her, n dey never earned a single burn. But it is possible there is some strong chemical mixing in it in Pak cuz a close frn on her wedding recently had it done, iwish i cud post the henna pix of hers, but no permission:snooty: that i hold, it was so beautifully done, deir was whole henna on the regular henna and outlined wid dis black dyee, butttttttttt she got alll the outlined part iguess burned right after her wedding and it just took her over a month to recuperate. But that was one case. Anyhow, wud love to know where to get it from. and ya Sweet u said africans get it, ibelieve it is about the regions too, dat is people from diff regions have diff henna tastes, arabs n africans are more fond of blackk henna color, n ithink their preparation method is natural and it is about the ingredients they use that give this color.Y don’t u ask some african frnd of urs about it n share wid us?. But ya this black dye one is too chemical-ishhhh.
Anyhow just found on google, somebody stated she uses godrej black dye, mixes it wid some lukewarm water and applies and removes upon drying , and gets the effect , den deir is another one saying get black henna from mart mix it wid 2 teaspoons of wella herbal liquid 6%(whuff dunno abt it) and apply, remove on drying. So somebody who wants to try it…do let us know den in what state are ur hands,
Their are diff henna arts on, now their is zardosi mehendi in tooooo since some long time, dey use zari n glue it on hands using fevicol. den dere are other glittery hennas , also golden colors , silvers, gosh wut not…just desperately wanna grab them all but dunno where to find them.

Re: this mendhi/henna design...

Re: this mendhi/henna design...

oh yes ..the black henna it is so dangerous....henn page and henna tribe has all the info on that...I'm a professional henna artist ..i would never suggest anyone to use that $***...even if you are black brown yellow orange whatever colour skin you are...it has PPD in it.

unfortunate;y .it is really common and popular in India and Pakistan... i often fight with my cousins who get this done ...aaargh
