It has been almost a month since I joined GS, and I must say I am a little disenchanted by the level of participation of women in topics that are related to world affairs and politics. I think my concern is legitimate, since I sense a similar aloofness and insouciance from the womenfolk in my family and among my friends. I think the pattern is even more common among the desi broads than their western counterparts, especially here on GS.
I have concocted some gross-generalizations regarding their aversion to politcs. It is because:
the vast majority of politicians are men
women have an inherent antipathy to conflict, war and bloodshed (inevitable fruits of politics)
women feel that political decisions do not affect them
women don’t “get” the intricacies of politcs, and hence stay away:D
women are abhorrent to extremist views and always opt for moderate ones(which is a rarity in politics)
GS’ WA, General and Pak Afffairs are rife with over zealous extremists, which acts as a deterrent to participation
Feel free to agree, disgree, vehemently disagree or add your two paisas.
I used to frequent khail khilari, politics and world affairs. However I found that the holding of opinions other than your own lead to “gali galooch” which is entirely unpleasent. It is (indeed) becasue of my religious views that I have been called a whore by local mullahs. It is easy (or so that asssume) to shut a woman up.
And wo betide a woman to say anything back in the same manner. Then she becomes mother to all whores and almost akin to a pimp
I am not so insecure in my opinions that I need to validate them whilst being cussed by some 2 penny taxi driver in dubai/newyork on a BB. So its better - in that sense to keep away from the bakwas that the insecure come up with. For some reason it is in the above forums that the insecure congrigate.
I used to visit the religion and world section to better understand the Pakistani/Muslim point of view and the religion of Islaam...and after a short while I became completely disgusted. There are those who ruin things for everyone on those boards due to their closed and small minds.
I am sorry for being judgemental here, but it appears that most of the girls know so little about most of the things and then the things they know get talked to death over and over again.

Okay forgetting the all the loonies and fanatics in this forum. But what about at home? What section of the news paper do you reach for first? Metro? sports? Business? Arts and Living? City? Do you regularly watch news on TV (tube?)

It depends on which newspaper you read, it looks like you are describing NYTimes ( of which the last page of the main section known as OP-ed), WSJ has different sections (that one: money and investing).
