This happened yesterday....

We were leaving for lunch (3 guys and 2 gals), in the elevator… two floors down, the elevator stopped… and another couple joined us. As soon as they joined us… both of them hugged each other and started kissing etc…

The five of us just kept quiet… When we got out of the elevator… one of the persons in my group commented (out of earshot) “that was gross!”… and everyone agreed. One girl commented… “even if they wanna do that, they better do that in private - why do they need to show off in such vulgar manner”.

Now this is USA… and 3 of them (in my group) were WASP, and one was from Denmark (gora). So I was thinking, to me, this was obscene and vulgar… but even for the western culture this was not acceptable.

To those who come to USA from another culture, there is definitely a culture shock. To those who live there for a while, the shock wears off, replaced by a numbness.

The question brings us to the bigger issue of public display of emotions. Every culture has its own limits. What is the fine line which separates ‘cute’ with ‘vulgar’?

it isnt very obvious from your post as to what it is that you are looking for. is it more like a graphic description of "when cute turns vulgar"? or would a general slamming of american moral values and ethics do?

for someone from a country with no censorship laws, your danish friend's reaction sure sounds odd. maybe the kissing was too sloppy by his native standards.

numbness? more like an acceptance of open hugs and kisses over hidden bottom pinching and crude remarks. openness isnt a bad price to pay to lose the frustrated folks who make life so difficult in a "decent" desi society.

Queer white anglo saxon protestent wasp is equivalent of brahmin in india.Even the jews resent them .
There is varying type of morality among "American" wasp too.Dont the royal family of england practice what is consideered backward culture of arranged marriage in developing countries.
All those sexual freedom of europe scandinavia,danish,dutch,swede,norwegian may be result of there developmental heritage.We are not coming from there roots,while change is inevitable let us not do it for doing sake.
There are other ways to express love than smack kiss or necking,or tongue licking ,tongue twisters,which are minor form of sex acts .Would you let open & non private act of sex,&IF not WHY?It is vile just as kissing inpublic was vile in victorian england.

Think before saying yes_why?is it usefull,is it necessary,does it have alternative ,whats the goal.& defenitely NO if it is harmfull .

Those ppl. who make life so difficult do that not for that,Co education or socialization between boys & girls can help ,if one wants to be generous or sympsthetic to eve teasing.;-)))).
