In a shocking incident a man and his newly wed wife were on Thursday paraded naked for daring to tie the knot last week, despite being members of two different castes, without the consent of their parents in a village in Khunti subdivision of Jharkhand.
Bishun Nayak and Gayna Kumari, who represented Harijan and Adivasi castes respectively, had been getting threats from elders of Manhu village of social ostracism if they did not end their love affair, till last week.
However their decision to announce themselves as husband and wife through an affidavit earned the wrath of the Pahans and Mundas (village elders) who called a ‘social meeting’ on Thursday, which objected to the marriage, Deputy Superintendent of Police of Khunti Sub-division Madhusudan Bari said.
The couple was declared ‘ostracised’ at the meeting and then paraded naked.
The police after receiving information rescued the duo while they were being taken around in naked condition, he said.
Four elders, Bhadrav Pahan, Birsa Pahan, Somar Pahan and B Pahan were arrested.
“The village elders did not accept the affair as the girl belongs to Adivasi community and the boy to Ghasi (harijan). Her parents are against the affair,” the DSP said.
An FIR would be lodged into the incident and the boy and girl were brought to the Khunti police station for the purpose, he said.
“The 20-year olds do not know the process of court marriage. They thought an affidavit is all they needed,” Bari said.
