***The submarine, named Saad, is the third Agosta 90B built for Pakistan by French firm DCN International. General Musharraf hailed its induction as “a step towards self-reliance in marine defence” and said the country’s defence had been made impregnable.
The construction of Agosta 90B started in Karachi in 1998 with the help of French naval technicians. “It has given a considerable boost to our defence capability and Pakistan has now joined an elite group of countries which can construct submarines,” Musharraf said at the induction ceremony. “It has completed the cycle of self-reliance in all the three forces - air force, navy and army,” he said. ***

NOT really! Our airforce is still looking for a good 4th generation fighter to replace aging f16s and flying metals f7pgs. Jf-17 program has just started and it would take another 3-5 years to commision those jets in PAF. So... cycle isn't complete yet. It will be when FIRST jf-17 made in pakistan flies from one of the PAF bases.
Also, pakistan navy needs to work on making its own warships tied to latest trends around the world, "the stealth" warships.
thats good... at last NRDA is working on some indigenous projects... I know when i was there that they were working on some active sonobouys, and on passive with three private companies... a good news for Pakistani private sector, at last they are coming forward in contributing their share in self relience.
The best option for naval defense available to Pakistan right now is to focus on building a submarine-based navy. We are nowhere near a security situation where a prohibitively expensive stealth programme is needed.
We have the technology to buil advanced submarines… we need to exploit this to its full potential.
i agree with you Maddy… even the advanced nations like Swedan, Italy, and Switzerland are not puting their leg in stealth Navy as it too expansive for them… better option for pakistan is keep control its waters, with good surveillance, and ofcourse counter attack capabilities in worst case scenario… we need better couter measures, for which we shouldn’t rely on others… good news is that in last 8 or 9 years NRDA is developed alot.. I hope we will hear some more good news in near future ..

:D
I think you'll find that Switzerland doesn't have a navy at all because it is a landlocked country :)
