How does performance (speed) of Pentium 4 M compares with that of Centrino? I think the current offerings in laptops come with 3 GHz max in Pentium 4 M, but only 1.6 GHz in Centrino.
If long battery life was not an important factor in buying a laptop, which one would be a better buy in terms of performance?
yes, P4-M is specially made for less power use
So f.e. if your gonna type a letter it ll use only 500 mhz but if you start gaming after it will use full processor power
and besides that, they use less power.----> a p4 @ 2.0 ghz will use more battery power then a P4-M 2.0 Ghz.
If you want the top of the bill, buy yourself a Pentium-M. Not a P4-M
A Pentium-M @ 1.6 ghz is just as fast as a P4-M @ 2.2 Ghz.
lying beneath the Centrino, including the Centrino Mobile Technology, is a combination of the new mobile processor Pentium-M (codenamed “Banias”), the new Intel 855 chipset family (“Odem,” “Montara-GM”), and a WLAN adapter in mini-PCI format called Calexico, which is based on the 802.11b/a standard. Only notebooks with this whole package have Intel’s approval to carry the name ‘Centrino Notebook.’ As soon as one of the above is missing, it ain’t Centrino no more.
And a centrino laptop adds wireless stuff to it.----> prognose of a magazine, in 2007 80 % of laptops will be with an Intel Centrino

Centrino does nothing :) it adss only wireless abilities to it. you are confusing a Pentium-M and a Pentium 4-M.
average pentium-M uses 500-600 mhz less speed and is still just as fast.
but for the rest your correct, the Pentium -M is only available @ 1.6 Ghz max, while the P4-M is available till 3.0 Ghz I think
So for performance only???
The P4-M cuz it s availabe at higher clocks :)
I visited Intel's site to do the comparision and surprisingly found similar results where Centrino (even with lower clock speed) had comparable performance results with that of P4 M.
